FROM THE SOUTH

Brethren, greetings from the South.  These past 2 weeks have been the busiest that I’ve had in the last year with my business. Jeep Beach was a resounding success, and I bring thanks from their Board of Directors for our Lodge’s generous donation toward their charity work.  I met brothers from all over the country while working and was very glad to have that fellowship since I had to miss the last meeting. I wear my masonic ring religiously, and in the several venues that require it, I wore a mask (mine bearing the square & compass), which makes me easy to spot. There’s no greater feeling than that of having a complete stranger approach you, extend their hand with a smile and share that friendly and brotherly grip. This usually leads to hearty conversation, a laugh, and an invitation to each other’s Lodge.  It’s comforting to know no matter where you are, what your circumstance, you are truly surrounded by brothers. I am very proud that we were able to raise 3 more worthy gentlemen to the sublime degree of Master Mason, and only wish I could have been there to share that moment. Thank you to everyone that worked so hard to make the degree happen, and especially to whomever filled my seat in the South while I was away. I look forward to getting back to work and seeing everyone soon. Stay safe and healthy! Jonny Magill Junior Warden

FROM SECRETARY’S DESK

If you do not see your name in the Past Masters list or the Active Perpetual list or birthday list call or email the lodge and I will add it to the correct list. I do not know how, why, but sometimes when the Trestle Board gets downloaded and sent to the printers or it’s my big fingers they go missing, sorry. I have a copy of the proposed legislation for the Grand Lodge of Florida Communications in my office for review. If you want a copy, I can email it to you.  I am usually in the office on Monday and Tuesday’s from 9:00-11:30am., and Thursdays from noon until 3:00pm. Brothers who have not paid your 2021 dues please do so. If you are sick, having surgery, or you significant other or one of your family members are sick please contact the Secretary’s office or the Chaplin so we can put them on the prayer list. If you are moving, have already moved contact the office and leave a message either on the phone or email giving the secretary the new address so I can update our records. Be safe Brothers and see you at the next meeting.

MASONIC EDUCATION

We all learned the same story.  On April 12, 1861, shortly after Abraham Lincoln was inaugurated, the Civil War began when the first shots were fired by the rebel army on Fort Sumpter when Lincoln ordered the Fort, which was desperately low on provisions, to be supplied.  There’s no question that’s when the war between the states began—right? Actually, no—that’s incorrect. In early 1861, the President of the United States, and Freemason, James Buchanan would have been very pleased to let the already simmering Civil War fall on the shoulders of the man that would follow him in a very short time—Abraham Lincoln.  To say that President Buchanan was ill-prepared to handle something as volatile as the Civil War is putting it mildly.  There is a reason I never profiled James Buchanan in my Famous American Freemasons series.  Buchanan wasn’t a very good example, and history remembers him as the President that could have, and should have done more to prevent the war between the states.  If he had, he could have saved 600,000 lives on both sides of the bloody conflict.

15th President and Freemason James Buchanan

However, in January of 1861, the recently occupied garrison in Charleston Harbor, called Fort Sumpter, was running desperately low on supplies.  The pressure on Buchanan was  tremendous, and he was backed into a corner, and ordered the merchant vessel the Star of the West to resupply the garrison.  But a Confederate sympathizer in Buchanan’s own cabinet, Secretary of State John Floyd, tipped off the rebel army that the supply ship was coming, and the rebel army was ready.  The first shots of the Civil War were fired on the Star of the West on January 9, 1861, when the Confederate Army unleashed its first heavy artillery bombardment of the Civil War against the supply ship.  Three of those shots hit the Star of the West, and the ship quickly turned tail and ran back to open water.

The first shots of the Civil War had already been fired, months before Abraham Lincoln became President of the United States.

Of course one of the first things Lincoln did as President was to re-order the provisioning of Fort Sumpter.  If they were low on supplies in January, they were desperate and starving in April.  This second attempt to re-supply Fort Sumpter is the one history remembers and we learned about in school—those shots that were fired on April 12, 1861.

So yes, the President of the United States at the time the first shots were fired during the American Civil War was a Freemason.

The Masonic Record:

James Buchanan was a member of Lancaster Lodge No. 43, Pennsylvania.  Abraham Lincoln petitioned Tyrian Lodge in Springfield, Illinois in 1860, and later withdrew his petition when he decided to run for President of the United States.  He was afraid his petition would be seen as an attempt to pander for the votes of Freemasons—something he was unwilling to do.  It was his intention to re-submit his petition and receive the degrees of Freemasonry after his Presidency was over—a promise he never had a chance to fulfill.

SICKNESS AND DISTRESS

FROM THE EAST

Greetings from the East,

We miss you at our Lodge functions; if you are concerned about contracting Covid-19, our Lodge environment is better than most. Several brothers have contracted the virus (God only knows where) but are now cured and have natural immunity. Several others have received the vaccines and are safe to be around. We all wear face masks (except when we are eating or drinking), social distancing is natural. Temperature is taken as you enter the building, and hand sanitizer and face masks are available. So, as I said before, our lodge environment is better than most. Come visit us and join in our activities; We would love to see you.

At our last Stated communication, we had the visit of our Right Worshipful District Deputy Grand Master Glen E. Good. There was a great turn out. The brothers from Gateway Lodge came to retrieve the Gavel.

We voted on 2 new members. One by transfer, of Brother Brain Moore. One by Plural, of Grand Master MW Thomas L. Turlington, Jr. To have are Grand Master as a member is a great honor.

The Master Masons Association meeting will be the first Wednesday April 7, at New Smyrna Lodge, Our Senior Warden will be preparing the food. Dinner at 6pm. Meeting at 7pm.

The second meeting in April we are having Master Mason Degree for 3 brothers. Degree practice for the first section is March 31 and April 8. Second section April 7 and 14.

FROM THE SOUTH

Greetings from the South.

Happy Spring everyone., This is by far my favorite time of the year. The days get longer and there’s a feeling of rebirth, refreshing and renewal. With that in mind, we will be looking at our Lodge building and finding areas that could stand a little updating. I have comprised a committee at the behest of R∴W∴ Greg Davis to investigate how to update & beautify the downstairs area of our Lodge and welcome your input. Please feel free to grab me at the next meeting, shoot me a text, or send an e-mail with your ideas. I will keep everyone posted when we have a solid direction we would like to work towards.

As far as the refreshing side goes, I will leave you with a small dose of Masonic humor courtesy of – Bro. Shalini Williams of Casa Grande, AZ.

A small Lodge had had a string of bad luck. It was preparing to initiate a candidate on a steamy evening in June and it′s air conditioner had stopped working. After sweating their way through part of the work, the Master had asked the candidate what he most desired. The candidate replied, “a beer”. At this juncture, the W.M., being startled, whispered “light” to the candidate. “OK,” the candidate replied, “a lite beer.”

I look forward to seeing everyone soon, stay safe and healthy!

Jonny Magill, Junior Warden

MASONIC EDUCATION

The Missing Comma and the Lost Meaning

When opening a Lodge of Entered Apprentice Masons, the Master asks the Senior Warden “What came you here to do”?  Brother Bob Wheeler also asks the newly made Entered Apprentice Masons the same question when they recite their Catechism.  The Senior Warden and the EA’s each reply “to learn to subdue my passions and improve myself in Masonry”.

This discussion will provide food for thought and you can decide for yourself “what came you here to do”.

Each of us were once Entered Apprentice Masons and we learned our Proficiency or Catechism by “mouth to ear”.  Once we became Master Masons we were presented with our own “little red” or in my case “little black” book containing the Ritual and we could see for ourselves where all those hard to learn words came from.  When first looking at that daunting text, do any of us remember seeing some or any punctuation in that single letter key?  I do not recall seeing any punctuation.

In the FC degree we were exposed to the winding staircase with its three, five and seven steps and the symbolism attached to them.  The number three denotes many symbolic things in Masonry.

The Three principle officers of a Lodge are the Worshipful Master, Senior and Junior Warden.

The Three Great Lights in Masonry are the Holy Bible, Square, and Compasses.

The Three burning tapers represent the Sun, Moon and Master of the Lodge.

The Principle Tenants of Masonry are Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth.

The Immoveable Jewels are the Square, Level and Plumb.

This list can go on and on.  But what would these symbols be without a comma or a pause?

The Three principle officers of a Lodge are the Worshipful Master Senior and Junior Warden.

The Three Great Lights in Masonry are the Holy Bible Square, and Compasses.

The Three burning tapers represent the Sun Moon and Master of the Lodge.

The Principle Tenants of Masonry are Brotherly Love Relief, and Truth.

The Immoveable Jewels are the Square Level and Plumb. You get the picture.

The point being made is, that as an Entered Apprentice you came to do three things – not two things.  Let us go back to the “What came you here to do” question if there was a comma.

First, you came “to learn”.  In the Opening Charge, which is used in this Lodge, we hear that “knowledge is obtained by degrees and wisdom dwells with contemplation; therefore, we should seek it.”

The Charge also tells us that one of the Great Objects of our Association is the promotion of a correct knowledge of the duties we owe to God, to our neighbor and to ourselves.

Next, you came “to subdue my passions”.  The Charge also reminds us that “one of the Great Objects of our Association is the restraint of improper desires and passions”.  It goes on to say, “it is useless parade to talk of the subjection of irregular passions within the walls of the lodge if we allow them to triumph in our intercourse with each other”.  It also tells us to “cultivate the great moral virtues which are laid down on our Masonic Trestle Board”.

Finally, you came to “improve myself in Masonry”.  The Charge directs us to “be united and practice with diligence the Sacred Tenants of our Order”.  The Charge goes on to tell us “to improve in everything that is good, amiable and useful”. It is hoped you will see that to receive the full meaning of “What came you here to do”, you will add the comma in the right place – “to learn to subdue my passions and improve myself in Masonry”.  Remember “what came you here to do” when you listen to the Opening Charge.  It tells you what you came to do.

Thank you.

MASONIC EDUCATION

Mason is a man who is clean inside and out, who neither looks up to the rich nor down. Definition of a Freemason on the poor, who can give without complaining, who can prosper without bragging, and who is considerate of women, children and old people. He is a man who is too brave to lie, too noble to cheat, too sensible to loaf, and who takes his share of the world’s goods, and lets other people take theirs.

ON THE LEVEL

To a Freemason on the level means just that –All Freemasons are Brothers who meet on the same level, regardless of their social or economic status outside the lodge. Princes, Presidents, and Leaders of business are no better or more important than bus drivers, plumbers and paper boys when they sit in the lodge together Freemasonry does not detract from a man’s accomplishments, nor does it exalt him above his Brethren because of his position outside the lodge. Lodge Devotion 723 UGLV

The Apprentice Poem by Tony Hamilton

We have required light from the beginning of time
To aid our growth and our flourish
Some achieve the light as the son of our line
Others just concentrate on self-nourish

I remember when I was a boy and my dad worked above and below the land
Always strong and rough but yet comforting to me
One night a week he would leave the house with briefcase in hand
Clean shaven, suited and booted, looking good; what a sight to see

Since I could remember, I never had to wonder where he would be that night
He always made a point of telling me he was going to ‘The Lodge’
As a busy child I just smiled and watched him fade in to the light
Knowing he was away until late; my curfew I could dodge!

I was growing up and my brain started to work in a slightly different way
Thinking of girls, money and kicking a ball for my beloved football team
But I knew they were only my disjointed dreams at the end of another miserable day
Come to me, I think not, or so at that time it would seem

Many a year passed by and the young and the old bull just clashed in opinion
Who wants to join ‘The Lodge’ anyway? it’s just for the old
But in a flash a surge ran through my veins, yes me, my Father’s minion
I had embraced the question I would need to ask , to become a Freemason I must be bold

Dad, how do I become a mason? Was the question I did ask
What took you so long was the old man’s response, a broad smile hitting his face
I thought to myself he’s smiling so much it looks like he’s wearing a jokers mask
Then it subsided, he dropped his voice and altered his vocal pace

Tony, you’ve asked the question and as your father I will help you to reveal
But I ask you one thing before your next step, what path do you see ahead?
I already knew the answer, not through intellect, but through a pre-determined feel
Dad, it’s really easy, I am only replacing the dead!

The young and old bull became one that day, everything before just seemed daft
My journey and expectation began and I joined; millions of me my brother
To be all seeing, full of light and honoured to be a small part of our craft
Never did I realize that the journey would be as fruitful as my bond with my mother.

CURRENT PICTURE OF OUR TEMPLE TODAY

LODGE HISTORY

New Smyrna Lodge 149 did not just simply begin to work as a chartered Lodge on January 22nd, 1896. Many things had to be accomplished before that date. First of all, a number of Freemasons had to come together, and make a decision to form a Lodge. After this decision was made Florida Masonic Law clearly spelled out what they must do. Evidence shows that the first meeting took place in New Smyrna on November 2nd, 1894. We don’t know who was present or where it was held. This meeting resulted a petition for dispensation to work as a “U. D. Lodge” being made to the Grand Master of Masons of Florida. This petition, having met with his approval, Grand Master James William Boyd granted his approval, and on January 18th, 1895 New Smyrna Lodge was a U. D. Lodge.  On January 21st, 1896 at the Grand Communication, in Jacksonville, the committee on Dispensations and By Laws read their report. This report recommended among other things, that a charter be granted to New Smyrna Lodge. On January 22nd, 1896, the Delegates voted and passed this report. The Grand Secretary announced that the Charter had been prepared and New Smyrna Lodge had been assigned number 149. On January 23rd, 1896, the Grand Lodge Officers installed the officers of the newly chartered Lodges, Worshipful Master George H. Count, , Senior Warden Alex A Berry, Junior Warden Fred A Berry, Treasurer Christopher L Dohn, and Secretary William A. Cook. The Lodge was chartered with 15 Master Mason members. New Smyrna Lodge No. 149 in 2021 has 411 Master Mason members. New Smyrna Lodge took its name from the town of New Smyrna Florida. New Smyrna changed its name to New Smyrna Beach, Florida. The Lodge did not and it is important to know that our correct name is New Smyrna Lodge Number 149 Free and Accepted Masons. Thus the Lodge was formed, chartered and set to work in a Lodge room located on the second floor of the C. L. Dohn Feed Store at the corner of Canal Street and Faulkner Streets in New Smyrna, Volusia County Florida.

FROM THE EAST

Greetings from the East,

Brothers it’s hard to believe that January is already gone by so fast. We had an EA degree on 2nd meeting in January which was conferred by RW Glen Good. He did an excellent job sitting in the East. Brother Bob Wheeler did in an excellent job of delivering the EA Lecture. We have two new EA Brothers.

February 1st we will be celebrating 125th anniversary. Some of the Grand Lodge officers will be in attendance. We will also have a Fellow craft proficiency that night.

Later on in the fall, if the Covid virus is under control we will have the 125th anniversary celebration.

We will be having a Master Mason degree March 6th starting at 9 a.m. Breakfast will be served at 8am. Every Wednesday in February at 6:30 will be our Master Masons practice for the upcoming degree.

FROM THE WEST

Hello, form the west my Brethren and may I start by saying I am proud and honored to be the Senior Warden in New Smyrna Lodge #149. However, I must encourage you all to continue wearing your mask, get your flu vaccine and the new COVID vaccine when available.

I did have the honor of attending my first Master Masons Association Meeting and it was excellent! There was an amazing lecture and a ceremony for our departed brothers. If you have not attended, I encourage you to do so, because the learning experience and brotherly love is felt there! I would like to complement our Right Worshipful, Worshipful Master, Officers, Bob Wheeler, Richard Kicklighter, and of course, lodge members for a great EA degree.

Currently, we are reviewing our new budget and remain excited about our past accomplishments. On a personal note, it was great seeing RW Howard Chase recovering and prayers are with the Most RW and all our brothers. Robert Segarra Senior Warden

FROM THE SOUTH

Brethren, greetings from the South.

January has been a great month so far, and due to the locks, fire escape, and other accomplishments of the brothers that came before me, there is nothing new to report on the building. The 125th year is going to be a great one! Recently I have had the opportunity to attend the new officer installations at Ormond #326, Volusia #77, Landmark #383, St John’s #37, and Volusia #77, and can tell you it is a VERY exciting time to be a Mason. I have met so many amazing brothers with a contagious energy, and true passion for the craft. While I know that it’s always encouraged to travel and visit other lodges, I would also recommend taking a few minutes and getting to truly know the brethren when you do. A one-on-one talk with stranger who is now a brother will enlighten and energize you. We all come from different backgrounds, ethnicities, religions, have different reasons for joining the craft, and it is great to enjoy a conversation without the politics of the day entering and dividing us. Remember all of you who have been in the craft for a longer period, the youngest men and upright Masons look up to you for guidance and mentorship!

Congratulations to the new brothers initiated in January and thank you to my brothers on the degree team for the hard work and fun in preparation of the degree! I look forward to seeing all of you at lodge and please let me know if there is anything you need, if I don’t know the answer, I’ll find out!

MASONIC EDUCATION

The All Seeing Eye
Whether from the biblical references, the artistic and architectural examples, or the frequent depiction in emblem books, it is easy to see that the All-Seeing Eye would have been a familiar symbol to the early Freemasons.
The earliest example of such a symbol just might be on a personal seal of Bro. Robert Moray (1609–1673), a Scottish soldier and natural philosopher who was initiated into the Craft in 1641. A partial wax impression of one of his seals is in the shape of a circle, with an eye at the center, radiating in every direction to the circumference. Was it a Masonic reference? There is no way to be certain, but some historians find it quite possible.
The symbol appears in an unmistakable way in the engraved frontispieces of two books of Bro. Fifield D’Assingy (1707–1744): An Impartial Answer to the Enemies of Freemasonry (1741) and A Serious and Impartial Inquiry Into the Cause of the Present Decay of Free-Masonry in the Kingdom of Ireland (1744). Each depicts the All-Seeing Eye with rays descending. The 1744 example, which is particularly well-drawn, seems to show a group of Freemasons on their way to the lodge under the protection of the divine gaze.
Although the All-Seeing Eye was clearly a symbol in the Masonic vocabulary by this time, it was a rather esoteric one, as it does not appear to show up in the Masonic writings of the era. It was an image that many Masons recognized, but did not much speak about either in their rituals or their interpretations of Masonry. That begins to change in the 1770s, during the ascendancy of the great Masonic lecturer, Bro. William Preston (1742–1818). The symbol appears in numerous places and forms in Preston’s degree lectures. For example, in his closing ceremony of second degree, the brethren are admonished: Then let us consider, that wherever we are, and whatever we do in the character of craftsmen, God is with us, and his all seeing eye observes us: that acting in conformity to our tenets we may declare in his presence that we have endeavored to discharge our duty with fervency and zeal. The above example was, obviously, not for publication at the time. But other Masons were mentioning the All-Seeing Eye in print. In 1766, Bro. Isaac Head gave a Charge in the Scilly Isles of England, in which he asked that the brethren remain “ever mindful that the Eye which pervades the immeasurable Regions of Space, and sees through the thickest Darkness, is ever present with us.”Many are aware that the common American lodge working came to us from William Preston via Bro. Thomas Smith Webb (1771-1819), who began publishing an American adaptation of Preston’s book. The 1802 edition of Webb’s Freemason’s Monitor documents how the All-Seeing Eye was taking its permanent place among the hieroglyphical emblems of the third degree. In Webb’s version, we are urged to remember that:. . . although our thoughts, words, and actions, may be hidden from the eyes of man, yet that ALL-SEEING EYE, Whom the Sun, Moon and Stars obey, and under whose watchful care even Comets perform their stupendous revolutions, pervades the inmost recesses of the human heart, and will reward us according to our merits.Reading these words, so familiar to us as American Freemasons, it is easy to see how the symbol of the All-Seeing Eye has retained its ancient meaning from the wisdom literature of the ancient Hebrews, through its role in European art and architecture, into the traditions of our Craft.
Perhaps it is ironic that, today, it is looked upon primarily as a Masonic emblem—even by those outside of our Fraternity. For, in truth, the All-Seeing Eye is a profound symbol that belongs to everyone who perceives the reality of an omniscient and just Supreme Being.
Shawn E. Eyer is the Director of Communications and Development of The George Washington Masonic National Memorial Association.

Last year 2020 with the virus it is been a challenging year. A special thanks to RW Don Tucker and his officers for an outstanding job that they did last year with what we had to deal with the virus. The OES has agreed to prepare our dinners for the next year what a great help this has been for the lodge. January 18th there will be an Entered Apprentice degree. There will be practices January 7th at 6:30 and January 13th at 6:30. January 17th which is a 3rd Sunday I would like to meet at the Olive Garden in Port Orange at 12:45 for fellowship and Lunch. We have a lot of new officers for this next year let’s come out and support them. By working together this year we will be able to accomplish many things. Remember we are Brothers.

Henry Davis Worshipful Master 2021

FROM THE WEST

Hello, form the West my Brethren and may I start by saying I am proud and honored to be in New Smyrna Lodge #149. Well recently I did contract the COVID virus but have had no long-term ill effects and only suffered moderate flu-like symptoms. From a medical standpoint I must encourage you all to continue wearing your mask, get your flu vaccine and the new COVID vaccine when available.

Building:

  1. The window replacement of the lodge is still pending. There is a 12-14-week delay in the start due to COVID. They also agreed to stage the work, so not to interfere with lodge business. We did receive a new quote from CW windows to include the fire escape door.
  2. We have investigated fire rated windows; however, they are unavailable and so we will continue to use the fire suppression system in place.
  3. Other: The 125th anniversary Challenge Coins & Pins are completed.

Robert Segarra, Senior Warden

FROM THE SOUTH

Brethren, greetings from the South. Let me begin by first taking a moment to thank each and every one of you for assisting me on my journey thus far, and more importantly for bestowing upon me the trust and honor that goes along with becoming an officer of this fine Lodge. It is an honor that I do not take lightly or look at as feather in the proverbial cap, but instead realize that to continue our success, it will take a lot of work, dedication and communication. Luckily, the officers that served before me have led us down the path of a great future here at 149. I will work diligently to make sure we continue on that path. Thank you to Bros. Robert Segarra and Robert L Wheeler for getting me up to speed with the duties and responsibilities of Junior Warden, you’ve been extremely helpful. I look forward to seeing everyone at Lodge, and please remember we are still in the midst of the Covid Pandemic, so to ensure the safety of all involved, we ask that you continue to observe the PPE and Social Distancing guidelines set forth by the Grand Lodge. We will continue temperature testing for all lodge visitors and members until further notice. I will have a comprehensive update for everyone on the status of the electronic locks, windows and overall status of our beautiful building in the next iteration of the Trestle Board. There are no words that can express my gratitude to my New Smyrna Lodge #149 brothers and 2020 Lodge officers for making me feel at home. I’m look forward to getting to know each and every one of you better, and looking forward to getting to work! My door and ear will remain open for any questions, comments, concerns, or ideas you may have. Jonny Magill, Junior Warden

MASONIC EDUCATION

The Proper Way to Wear a Masonic Ring

Q. What is the proper way to wear a Masonic ring?  Should the points of the compasses be toward or away from the body?  If you were hanging the American flag, would you put the stars down?  The same holds true of the ring.  Usually it is a gift, and has sentimental value for the wearer.  It should look right side up to him.  Rings are therefore worn with the points of the compasses toward the wearer.”

 A.  This subject is one on which Grand Lodges have made no regulation and popular opinion is divided.  We must therefore reason from analogy.  When the emblem of the square and compasses is displayed on a building, pennant, button, watch charm, etc., universal custom requires the points of the compasses point downward.

When displayed on the Altar they point away from the Master.  As the Master from his station views the compass from the Altar of his Lodge, the points are from, not towards him.  As the wearer of a compass watch charm views it, the points are down and away from his eyes.  In a similar way as he views the emblem on his ring the points should be down or away from his eyes.

The square is the symbol of earthly, the compasses of heavenly perfection.  As a combined emblem the ends of the square point up as a symbol of man’s aspirations toward God; the points of the compasses are down to represent heavenly qualities coming down from God to earth.  Therefore it would seem that the proper way to wear a ring would be that in which its symbolism is best expressed: namely, that in which, when the hand is held in its usual position the points of the compasses are towards the earth and away from the wearer’s eyes.

Thus it will be seen that our conclusion does not agree with the writer in Temple Topics.  He truly says that in hanging an American flag we would not put the starts down, but in hanging compasses or a square and compasses he surely would put the points of the compasses down.  When so worn they all serve the same purposes, and by no means the least of these purposes is to announce to the world the proud wearer is a Mason. This article is from Phoenix Lodge No. 8, located in Fayetteville N. C.  So, how do you wear your ring?

FROM THE SOUTH
Hello, from the south my Brethren and may I start by saying I am proud and honored to be in New Smyrna Lodge #149. It is amazing that through this COVID virus we have still grown, and the momentum forward has not stopped. As you may know, we have instituted temperature testing for all lodge visitors, and members. In addition, we still must remain diligent with the wearing of our mask and social distancing.
For all of you that were not able to attend lately we completed our Master Mason outdoor degree and the recent Fellow craft degree. Two outstanding events! I must say under the direction of our new leadership in the Grand Lodge, our Worshipful Master, and officers we have continued to make this an amazing lodge. Well on to my reports:
Building:

  • At our last meeting we elected to move forward with the window replacement of the lodge. There is a 12-14-week delay in the start due to COVID. They also agreed to stage the work, so not to interfere with lodge business. We did receive a new quote from CW windows to include the fire escape door.
  • We have investigated fire rated windows; however, they are unavailable and so we will continue to use the fire suppression system in place. Have a Blessed Holiday my Brothers.

MASONIC EDUCATION CONT:
“DON’T BURY ME WITHOUT MY APRON”

It is an ancient custom when a Brother Mason passes away, that, he no longer wears his Apron and his tools they lay quiet. But I beg of you my Brothers, closest family and loved ones too, that I must wear my Apron, for I have yet so much to do. Though I may not have it on the day I meet with fate, I’ll be penniless and destitute as I pass that pearly gate. For the Grand Master has sent me a summons on that very day. And as in my obligations, you know I must obey. That Grand Lodge will be called and opened for my final Degree. So, I must be properly clothed for the Grand Tyler to admit me. Don’t bury me without my Apron; my tools must not lay rest. For it’s in that Grand Lodge above where I must do my best.
Amen! S M I B!

FROM THE EAST

Can it be that October has gone, and November is here? What happen to Halloween, just a few kids came to our door. (Covet-19) in our Lodge, we had a busy month. We took care of a lot of items that needed to be done. ie: money moved, upkeep of building, & committee reports. Our 2nd meeting was a called communication, for a Fellow Craft Degree. Three E.A. Brothers were Passed, (John JaJa Williams, Lamon Butch Owens, & James M. Napier) there were 35 Brothers in attendance. The Eastern Star Ladies always do a wonderful dinner, for us. $8.00 can’t beat it. Be ready for our 2nd. Meeting for this month. We will have a called communication, for the Entered Apprentice Degree, We have ten, (10) Candidates ready to receive this Degree. Please come out and support these Brother Masons. Our own R.W. D.D.G.M. will be in the East for Degree. Show him your support.

R:. W:. Donald H. Tucker W:. M:.

FROM THE WEST

Greetings Brothers from the West,
I’d like to give a big thanks to all the Brothers that helped me on preparing me to sit in the East for the Fellow Craft Degree. On November 16th we will have 10 candidates, 2 of them will be father and sons. Come out and support them. With the help of the Junior Warden, we should start to see new windows in the Lodge by the end of the year. It should take about 3 or 4 months. AS a reminder I’ve had a few calls on Brothers that need a ride to the Lodge and I will be picking them up and making arrangements for them to attend Lodge. If you are unable to drive and would
like to come to Lodge let me know. I will see about getting you a ride to the Lodge and home. If I be of assistance to
anyone please let me know.
Fraternally, Henry Davis, Senior Warden

Building:

  1. At our last meeting we elected to move forward with the window replacement of the lodge.

MASONIC EDUCATION CONTINUED: Masonic Square – The Square and Compasses (or, more correctly, a square and a set of compasses joined together) is the single most identifiable symbol of Freemasonry. Both the square and compasses are architect’s tools and are used in Masonic ritual as emblems to teach symbolic lessons. Some Lodges and rituals explain these symbols as lessons in conduct: for example that Masons should “square their actions by the square of virtue” and learn to “circumscribe their desires and keep their passions within due bounds toward all mankind”. Ark of the Covenant – The Ark of the Covenant reveals God’s Promise to David… and it is through this promise that we receive God’s continued mercy for our transgressions, today. That is the reason why the Ark of the Covenant is important to Masons. Masons believe that the Ark of the Covenant is the reason why Solomon`s temple was built. Masonic Altar – The Masonic altar, within the Masonic Lodge, upon which resides the Holy Books, is a symbol of our place of communion with God. In ancient times, however, the masonic altar was a place of sacrifice, atonement, and communion with God. Masonic Cable Tow – The Masonic Cable Tow is part of the dress of a candidate in which he agrees to go to the aid of a Brother with all his power and strength.” if it is within the length of his tow rope. The length of rope is symbolic of the first brother’s abilities. Masonic Lamb – The lamb is a symbol of innocence and purity. In Ancient Craft Masonry, the Lamb is the symbol of innocence. In the instructions of the First Degree: “In all ages, the Lamb has been deemed an emblem of innocence.” Hence it is required that a Freemason’s Apron should be made of lambskin. In the advanced Degrees, and in the Degrees of chivalry, as in Christian illustration, the lamb is a symbol of Jesus Christ.

New Smyrna Lodge received an email from the Grand Lodge of Florida about an elementary school in Volusia County that needed a new American Flag.  New Smyrna Masonic Lodge looked deep in our cabinets and found an American Flag to donate to Pathway Elementary School. Below is R:. W:. Chase and A. J. Winterwerp presenting the flag to the principal of the school.

LODGE HISTORY CONT:

In 1945 Degrees conferred and reinstatements were numerous. The National Department of Defense and Transportation prohibited any meetings of more than 50 persons, consequently the Grand Lodge Communication was canceled. The Sale of $100.00 Life Memberships was terminated on September 1st, 1945, and the money was placed in the “sinking fund.” Eight had been sold. A new roof was installed on the Temple at a cost of $1,325.00. The State Comptroller notified the Lodge that if it continued to rent the Temple for commercial purposes its property tax exemption would be lost. On June 14th, 1946, the Lodge celebrated its 50th year anniversary. Membership was 205, the highest in history to date. Motions prevailed on June 17th, 1946 to raise the fees to $25.00 for each Degree, and that military personnel would again pay dues effective January 1st, 1947. A motion prevailed that the Lodge cash all its War Bonds and pay $3500.00 on the mortgage. TO BE CONTINUED.

MASONIC EDUCATION

THE STORY BEHIND MASONIC FORGET ME NOT:

In the years between World War 1 and World War 2 The blue Forget Me Not Emblem (Das Vergissmeinnicht) was a standard symbol used by most charitable organizations in Germany, with a very clear meaning: “Do not forget the poor and the destitute“. It was first introduced in German Masonry in 1926, well before the Nazi era, at the annual Communication of the Grand Lodge Zur Sonne, in Bremen, where it was distributed to all the participants. That was a terrible time in Germany, economically speaking, further aggravated in 1929 following that year’s Great Depression. That economic situation contributed to Hitler’s accession to power. Many people depended on charity, some of which was Masonic. Distributing the forget-me-not at the Grand Lodge Communication was meant to remind German Brethren of the charitable activities of the Grand Lodge. In early 1934, it became evident that Freemasonry was in danger.  In that same year, the Grand Lodge of the Sun (one of the pre-war German Grand Lodges, located in Bayreuth) realizing the grave dangers involved, adopted the little blue Forget Me Not flower as a substitute for the traditional square and compasses. It was felt the flower would provide brethren with an outward means of identification while lessening the risk of possible recognition in public by the Nazis, who were engaged in wholesale confiscation of all Masonic Lodge properties. Freemasonry went undercover, and this delicate flower assumed its role as a symbol of Masonry surviving throughout the reign of darkness. In 1936 the Winterhilfswerk (a non- Masonic winter charity drive) held a collection and used and distributed the same symbol, again with its obvious charitable connotation. Some of the Masons who remembered the 1926 Communication possibly also wore it later as a sign of recognition. We have no evidence of that, and its general signification still was charity, but not specifically Masonic charity. During the ensuing decade of Nazi power a little blue Forget Me Not flower worn in a Brother’s lapel served as one method whereby brethren could identify each other in public (although even then it was not always safe to wear any non-Nazi pin), and in cities and concentration camps throughout Europe. The Forget Me Not distinguished the lapels of countless brethren who staunchly refused to allow the symbolic Light of Masonry to be completely extinguished. When the Grand Lodge of the Sun was reopened in Bayreuth in 1947, by Past Grand Master  Beyer, a little pin in the shape of a Forget Me Not was officially adopted as the emblem of that first annual convention of the brethren who had survived the bitter years of semi-darkness to rekindle the Masonic Light. At the first Annual Convent of the new United Grand Lodges Of Germany AF&AM (VGLvD), in 1948 Bro. Theodor Vogel, Master of the Lodge “Zum weißen Gold am Kornberg”, in Selb (then in Western-occupied Germany), remembered the 1926 and 1936 pin, had a few hundred made and started handing it out as a Masonic symbol wherever he went. When Brother Vogel was later elected GM of the Grand Lodge AFuAM of Germany and visited a Grand Masters’ conference in Washington, DC, he distributed the pins there.

FROM THE SECRETARY’S DESK

Brothers from Halifax 81,Welcome to New Smyrna Lodge No. 149. This Trestle Board has your birthdays for the month but not the Perpetual, 50+ year exempt and Past Masters of Halifax 81. I plan on having these items in the next issue. Any questions please call the Lodge at 386-423-2370 or email me at: NSL149@cfl.rr.com. We are trying to send out most of the trestle boards by email to cut the cost of mailings. Please drop an email to the lodge with yours and I can add it to the list. Also, email is one of the best ways to get a quick response. I check the lodge email once a day. There is also a letter going out to you all to update your information, and for me to check that I have entered your information correctly. I am looking forward to sitting in Lodge with you all and working with you all also. For those of Halifax Lodge 81 who have not paid your 2020 dues please do so. The dues amount will not change until 2021. Please send all your correspondence to New Smyrna Lodge No. 149 and make you checks out to New Smyrna Lodge No. 149. The Mailbox for Halifax Lodge No 81 is being cancelled and all mail is being forwarded to New Smyrna Lodge and the bank accounts are also being closed out for Halifax 81.

Brothers, for those who have paid you dues, thank you. For those who have misplace the dues notice or cannot remember if you have paid your dues please call the Secretary and I will check and let you know if you have or have not. For those Brothers who want to pay with credit card PLEASE call me at the Lodge number and I can enter the information for you. We are having problems with Circumscribe. It is not that the money does not get to us but that we have no record of who pays through Circumscribe. They have stopped the weekly emails with the Brothers names and amounts paid. Grand Lodge is aware of the situation and is trying to correct it. Every time we get the bank statement with a payment from circumscribe, we call Grand Lodge and complain. If you pay though circumscribe, please drop an email to me so I can send you your dues card and mark you as dues paid. 2021 Dues notices will go out after October 15th, 2020. This is so Grand Lodge can complete merging Halifax’s membership files into New Smyrna membership files. Please do not send any money in until you receive the dues notice.

Members of Halifax Lodge No. 81, F. & A.M.

Re: Merger of Lodges

Dear Brethren: I, as Grand Master, have reviewed the Merger Plan for New Smyrna Lodge No. 149 and Halifax Lodge No. 81 and give my approval for this Merger to take place. New Smyrna Lodge No. 149 to be the continuing Lodge and the merger to take place as of August 31, 2020. Per Regulation 16.04 (g), Halifax Lodge No. 81 shall surrender its Charter to the Grand Lodge and deliver the Charter to the Grand Secretary. We would caution both Lodges to be certain that all property, if the Lodge owns any property or assets or bank accounts, be transferred or sold or disposed of before the final merger. Once the merger takes place the Officers of the old Lodge can no longer sign for the Lodge and it becomes a burden trying to tie up all the loose ends. Be advised that all documentation relative to finances and real property and transfers of the same are to be reviewed by the Grand Lodge General Counsel for recommendation to the Grand Master for approval. While we are saddened that the Lodges are diminishing, we congratulate you for taking this bold step to bring together the resources of these two bodies for the benefit of Freemasonry. I want to wish the two Lodges much success in this merger and that the resulting Lodge will flourish.

Sincerely and fraternally,

Thomas L. Turlington, Jr.

Grand Master

Why is it called BLUE LODGE?

By Brother Elton Trindade

The question always is ” Why is it called BLUE LODGE?” Here is some inside in this subject from my research.
Why have we adopted blue into the lodge name?  Where does it come from?  What does it represent and mean?
The mother of all Freemasonry.  The place where every man begins his journey into the Ancient Craft of Free and Accepted Masons. “The Blue Lodge” – It has been here in America that the term “Blue Lodge” has become popularized and so widely used.  Originally, it was frowned upon, and Lodges were called, Craft Lodges or Ancient Craft Lodges, some were even called a St. Johns Lodge. According to Coil’s Masonic Encyclopedia, there may be a number of reasons why symbolic lodges are called Blue Lodges. Since ancient times, the color blue has been associated with immortality, eternity, and fidelity. References to the color blue in the Bible emphasize the special place blue has as a color symbolizing goodness and immortality. The Druids also honored the color while the ancient Egyptians used the color to represent Amun, one of their most important gods. The ancient Babylonians associated the color blue with the gods. In Medieval times, Christians saw blue as the symbol of perfection and hope, and well as of immortality and fidelity. It is not known when blue first came to be associated with Freemasonry, although some historians think that initially the color was used in Craft Masonry to represent the sky. Today, blue for Masons symbolizes brotherhood and symbolizes the fact that Masons should seek out virtues as extensive as the blue dome of heaven. Albert Mackey’s Encyclopedia of Freemasonry under “Blue” has further light to share. He says “Blue is emphatically the color of Masonry. It is the appropriate tincture of the Ancient Craft degrees. The Hebrew word for blue when referring to spiritual matters is tekhelet התכלת derived from a root word meaning perfection. It is well known that among the ancients, initiation into the mysteries and “perfection” are synonymous terms and this is why blue is the appropriate color for the greatest of all the systems of initiation the world has ever known, The Ancient Blue Lodge Craft.” Beyond the allegory and symbolism of the color blue, there is the reality of millions of men who have experienced things beyond themselves, transformed and evolved into their highest potentials, reached even further to give the same to other men, while standing in and being a member of a Blue Lodge. It is said over and over again, “There is no other degree “higher” then the third degree and being a Master Mason. There is no higher distinction in our entire institutional Fraternity! ” With that being said, we all should remember, support and love our Blue Lodges, where we began as good men and through the motherly love of our Ancient Craft Lodge, we were brought into the world anew….literally brought from the dark to the light, to rise as GREAT MEN!

Brothers, for those who have paid your dues, thank you. For those who have misplaced the dues notice or cannot remember if you have paid your dues please call the Secretary and I will check and let you know if you have or haven’t.

Re: Merger of Lodges

Dear Brethren:

In accordance with Regulation 16.04 of the Digest of the Masonic Law of Florida I, as Grand Master, have reviewed the Resolution for the merging of New Smyrna Lodge No. 149 and Halifax Lodge No. 81, with New Smyrna Lodge No. 149 being the continuing Lodge, and find it in order and give my approval for said Resolution to progress according to Regulation 16.04 (d) which states: (d) Upon approval by the Grand Master the Resolution shall be read to the Lodges involved at a stated communication and if approved by majority vote of the members present and voting in each Lodge, the Resolution shall be laid over in each of such Lodges for not less than one month nor more than two months, and if upon due notice it is adopted by three-fourths (3/4) vote of the members present and voting at a Stated Communication of each Lodge involved in the merger, the proceedings for merger shall progress as specified in the order of the Grand Master. Be advised that in order to move forward with the final approval of the merger each Lodge will need to provide copies of the Minutes of the Stated Communications evidencing the remaining required votes by the membership of both Lodges; with the final vote on the Resolution being a written ballot and being adopted by three-fourths (3/4) vote of the members present and voting. While we are saddened that the Lodges are diminishing, we congratulate you for taking this bold step to bring together the resources of these two bodies for the benefit of Freemasonry.

Sincerely and fraternally,

Thomas L. Turlington, Jr.

Grand Master

cc: Grand Secretary Chairman, Jurisprudence Committee D.D.G.M., 13th Masonic District

A motion/second (Winterwerp/Wheeler) at the July 20th, 2020 Stated Communication to accept the Grand Masters decision accepting the Merger as written was made. Discussion followed and the first vote, a hand vote was UNANIMOUS. . W:. M:.  Tucker ordered the results of the hand vote announced in the August Trestle Board. W:. M:. Tucker then ordered the Grand Master’s decision be held over for 30 days or until the next Stated Communication (August 17th, 2020) when a written ballot requiring a ¾ majority for the merger to be completed.

SICKNESS AND DISTRESS

Contact the secretary or Chaplain with Brothers who are sick or distressed so we can put them on our prayer list. Keep the families of Brother Hershell Venable who has passed to the Celestial Lodge above; Glen E. Smith, who is still having back and neck pain; Brother Everson; Brothers Tesoriere (Halifax 81) and Troutman (Landmark 383) with cancer; and all our sick and infirmed Brothers and their family members that we don’t know about. Also, keep our service personnel, deployed and at home, and all first responders in our hearts and prayers.

 The Craft and It’s Symbols

Emblems to Live By

When a Sword pointing to a Naked Heart was added to the ritual is uncertain. It is referred to as a symbol of justice. It pointedly reminds us that God will reward us according to what we do in this life. But we know the rewards—the justice—will be tempered with mercy and understanding.

The sprig of Acacia symbolizes Faith—faith in the immortality of man, faith in the promises made by God in his Volume of the Sacred Law.

The All-Seeing Eye has been a symbol of Deity from the beginning of religion. The ancients adopted it from religion as a symbol of Deity for their “mysteries.” From many ages has come the knowledge that the Great Architect of the Universe sees all, knows all and controls all things. It is little wonder that the early ritualists associated this symbol with control of the sun, moon, stars, and comets. It reminds man that God is powerful, yet just, merciful, and loving.

The Bee Hive We must assume that the Bee Hive became an important symbol in Freemasonry the way the other symbols entered it. It symbolized what the cathedral builders did and the way they did it. The bee definitely is industrious. He works hard and tirelessly, not for himself, but for the swarm. He has a strength and knowledge of materials that cannot be duplicated. He works as a unit. No man working for himself, but with his fellowmen to achieve a common goal. They worked under conditions that would stop modern architects and engineers. They had only man, beast and ropes to put the pieces together. Every man had to do his part, his share, to take pride in his assignment, large or small. One man alone could accomplish little or nothing, undoubtedly, the operative masons saw their duplication in the bees. They could readily see in the honey-producers the symbol of the industry they, as builders of great cathedrals, practiced.

More to come in the next Trestle Board
