From the East

Brothers, as I’m sure most of you know by now, hurricane Irma has devastated 2 of the lodges in our13th district.  Ormond Lodge #326, and Halifax Lodge #81 both ended up with severe damage to their buildings. It could be several Months until they are able to repair their lodges for use again. We, at New Smyrna Lodge have been blessed that no damage was sustained to our lodge. We have offered to those lodges, the use of our lodge for their meetings. We have worked on a schedule that will accommodate everyone in need of using our lodge. We will open our doors and our arms in brotherly love until they can get their lodges back in working order. It would be great if all of the brothers involved can support each other during this trying time. On a more positive note, at our last meeting, September 18th, we held the final ballot on the resolution for Daytona Lodge #270 to merge with our lodge. The ballot was unanimous!  That was the final step in making the merger happen.  Our Secretary W:.A.J. Winterwerp and Daytona’s secretary W:. Howard Chase have worked long and hard to make this merger happen. I would like to thank both for making this a reality.  I would also like to thank all the brothers at each lodge who have supported us in this endeavor.  W:. AJ and W:. Chase are going to drive to the Grand Lodge in Jacksonville personally and deliver the paperwork on Thursday the 21st.  The future is looking great! Also, at our last meeting, we had the pleasure of having Boy Scout Troop #436 join us for dinner and the flag presentation. A couple of boys from that Troop came to the lodge after the hurricane and assisted our secretary in cleaning up our grounds.  We also made one of their members, Bryce Sparks, our charity of the month. Bryce is working on a project to attain his Eagle Scout patch.  New Smyrna Lodge donated $100 toward the project with members donating another $338 out of their pockets, totaling $438 toward his project.  I am so proud of our members for stepping up for a great cause!  Good Luck Bryce on your endeavor for the Eagle Scout Patch! Our next Stated communication will be on October 2nd.  Hope to see you all there.

Fraternally,

W:.M:. Walt Layton

From the West

Welcome Brothers from Daytona Lodge No.270.We are happy but sad to see you be part of New Smyrna Lodge. Happy because we together as a Lodge will excel to new and better things. Sad, because of you having to close your doors and merge with us for various reasons. This is a new day for our Lodge. The Lodge is gaining some GREAT Brother! We have a lot going on in our building with the Lodges hit by the hurricane using our Lodge until they can get back into their home Lodges again. Welcome to these Brothers and Sisters also. Don’t forget that elections of Officers are only a few months away. Think seriously about being an officer in 2018. Great things will be happening and be part of it. As you read below in this Trestle Board and see a paragraph that was read for Masonic Education at the last Stated meeting, take time and think about what the paragraph is saying. Be part of your Lodge, voice your opinion, give your officers fresh ideas and direction you want YOUR Lodge to grow and proceed. Remember Brothers, you only get out of Masonry and your Lodge what you put into it. Please get involved.

Fraternally,

Mark King SW

Brothers, this was read at the Stated Communications on September 18th, 2017 and the Brothers present ask for it to be put in the Trestle Board:

DO YOU JUST BELONG?

Are you an active member? The kind that would be missed? Or are you just contented That you name is on the list? Do you attend the meetings and mingle with the crowd? Or do you stay at home and crab long and loud? Do you take an active part and help the Lodge along? Or are you satisfied to be the kind to just belong? Do you ever go to visit a member who is sick? Or leave the work for just a few and talk about the clique? There is quite a program scheduled that means success if done. And it can be accomplished with the help of everyone. So attend the meetings regularly, and help with hand and heart, Don’t be just a member, but take an active part. Think this over, Member, are we right or are we wrong? Are you an active Member? Or DO YOU JUST BELONG!!

THE BUILDING OF NEW SMRYNA’S TEMPLE

Continued: The year 1919 began on a busy note. In addition to heavy degree work, the Lodge was the host for its first recorded District Meeting. On March 19th, 1919, a resolution was spread on the minutes and a gold star placed on the service flag in memory of Brother John Mooney, the first of our members to make the supreme sacrifice. He died in combat in France. Mothing had been recorded since January 1917, regarding the building of the Temple until March 19th, 1919, when a Special Communications was called to discuss that matter. I could find no record of that Communication being held. On June 4th, 1919, a motion prevailed to change the Stated Communication date back to the first and third Monday. A Special School of Instruction was held here for the first time on October 1st, 1919 with 70 Brothers attending. On October 6th, 1919, a new building committee was appointed to erect a Temple.

The Worshipful Master requests your attendance at our Stated Communication

September 18th, 2017

gold

                                                                    From the East

We are now almost through August and have one more Month of being “Gray”. We have still had a great turnout at our meetings during this slow time of the year. It is great to see all of the Brothers turning out and supporting our lodge. I personally truly appreciate the Brothers who do continue to support our lodge.

At our last meeting, we voted to accept the resolution from Grand Lodge of Daytona Lodge #270 merging with our lodge, it was a unanimous vote. It is great seeing our Brothers accepting another lodge of Brothers into our lodge and working together in peace and harmony. At our next meeting, September 18th, we will have a written secret ballot to accept the merger. That will be the last process in the merger at which time we will be “one” if accepted.

We will be hosting our Brothers from Daytona #270 on September 13th for their last stated communication to be held at our lodge. We will also provide a welcoming dinner for those Brothers coming to the meeting to show them that we are welcoming them with open arms. Come on out Brothers for this welcoming dinner and show your support for the merger.

I am also very excited to have our SW Mark King and his wife Bonnie back from New York for our next meeting. Mark and Bonnie have been away for the Summer visiting family in upstate New York.

On a sad note, please keep W:.AJ Winterwerp and his Father Carl Winterwerp in your thoughts and prayers at this trying time. They have lost their Brother and Son, Francis Winterwerp, after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Hope to see you all at our next meeting.

Fraternally, W:.M:. Walter G. Layton

                                                                 From the West

Hello brothers,

The merger between Daytona Lodge No. 270 and ours is almost complete and we are about to enter a new and exciting future for our Lodge. The Brothers coming from Daytona Lodge No. 270 adds their strengths to ours making New Smyrna Lodge 149 an unstoppable combination. The future is a blank scrip ready to be written by members of our newly joined Lodges. There is nothing that we cannot accomplish, adding new members, supporting our community, increasing Masonic Education and being able to give relief to those in need. It soon will be time to start thinking about next year and all the officer positions that will need to be filled. Please give some thought to participating in filling these positions. They are open to all Members of our Lodge. On September 13th Daytona Lodge No. 270 will be having there last Stated Communications as Daytona Lodge No.270 at New Smyrna Lodge 149. Be sure to attend and welcome these Brothers into our Lodge. We will have our usual Stated Communication on September 18th with dinner at 6pm and the meeting starting at 7pm. The Senior Grand Warden of Florida has scheduled a town hall meeting on October 11th at New Smyrna Lodge No. 149. Be sure to put it on your calendar and attend to hear what the Senior Grand Warden is going to say. School has started and the school buses are out, remember to stop when you see there flashing lights, our children are future keep them safe.

Fraternally,

Senior Warden Mark King

Brothers All,
Daytona Lodge 270 will hold it’s meeting at New Smyrna Lodge 149 tomorrow September 13th. 2017 at 7:30 pm. There will NOT be a dinner before the meeting but Daytona 270 needs Brothers to sit in chairs. Also this is the meeting where they have their final vote on the merger between our two Lodges.
The Worshipful Master request all Brothers to try and come out and show support for our Brothers from Daytona 270 Lodge.
New Smyrna Lodge came out will very little damage from the hurricane. 1 cracked window pane. We were very fortunate. Read below.
Also Brothers, Ormond Beach 326 sustained heavy damage from a tornado during hurricane Irma. They have requested to meet at our Lodge for their September Meeting and Halifax 81 lost their roof from the hurricane and have requested to meet at our Lodge until they can clean up or figure out what to do.
We have heard from Jobs Daughters who want to meet at our Lodge and are waiting to hear from the Eastern Star from both Lodges. We will keep you all informed about what is going on.
A J Winterwerp PM

THE BUILDING OF NEW SMRYNA’S TEMPLE

Continued: Since being chartered in 1896, the Lodge has been assigned to the 14th Masonic District comprised of the following Lodges, St. Johns 37-Deland, Halifax 81-Daytona Beach, Volusia 77-Barbarville, Brevard 113-Cocoa, Sanford 62-Sanford, New Smyrna 149- NSB, Indian River 90-Titusville. In 1917 the Grand Lodge realigned the Districts and we were assigned to the 20th Masonic District comprising of the same Lodges. Business of the Lodge was routine during the first five months of 1918. While little was recorded in the 1918 minutes regarding the First World War, the effect of it began to surface in June of that year. June 17th, 1918, by dispensation of the Grand Master, a petition was balloted on all three Degrees at the same time. The reason being is that the candidate was in the military and had been ordered to foreign duty. Dispensation was granted that year for several Brothers to be advanced short time. In June, meeting dates were changed from the first and third Monday to the first and third Wednesday. It was now common by dispensation to elect candidates for all three Degrees on the same ballot. In many cases, out-of-state Lodges were asked to confer the Degrees because the candidates were away on military duty. Many Special Communications were held this year to do the work of the Lodge, as well as courtesy work for other Lodges. To be Continued

The Worshipful Master requests your attendance at our Stated Communication

August 21st, 2017

From the East

Brothers all:

At our last meeting on July 17 we voted on the Resolution for Daytona Lodge #270 to merger with our lodge. Same resulted in a unanimous vote for the merger. The Lodge officers have signed the paperwork and our Secretary has forwarded the resolution to Grand Lodge for approval. Hopefully it will be approved and returned quickly so we can move forward with it. Hopefully the merger will be complete by September. Daytona #270 officers as well as the members of New Smyrna #149 are very excited about the merger and its final steps.

We also have a newly raised member, Warren Carman, who was raised on July 15th at Sanford Lodge. Brother Carman was not able to attend our Master Mason Degree for our other newly raised Brothers a while back at New Smyrna Lodge due to his work Schedule. I would personally like to thank the members of New Smyrna Lodge that did attend that degree along with all the members of Sanford Lodge who invited us to be part of the degree. Three other brothers other than Warren were also raised during that degree. What great fellowship it was! The Junior Warden, Mike Hindley, did an outstanding job in the East as well as King Solomon.

At this time, we have 4 new men that have contacted the Lodge and are interested in becoming new Masons. Hopefully they will like what they see and will move forward with their passion.

Until our next meeting, Brothers all be safe and contact us if you are in need of assistance with anything.

Fraternally, WM:. Walter G. Layton

From the West

Hello, my brothers from New York; I have been spending time with my family and some important friends that I had not seen in some time. Bonnie and I went to Owego New York to look up my father’s side of my family, while there I went to Owego’s Masons Lodge. Unfortunately for me the lodge had gone dark for the summer and I was unable to reach their Worshipful Master. The Red Jacket Lodge here in Lockport New York where we have our house is also dark for the summer.  It was great to hear that the Grand Masters official visit went very well.  I understand that our Lodge was well represented, and had a good showing of support for our own Brother DDGM Donald Tucker. I have called many of our Brothers, to keep up with all that is going on at our Lodge. The news that our Brother Warren Carmen was Raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason at Sanford Lodge No. 62 on July 15th is something I have been waiting to hear. Congratulations my Brother. Thank you to all the Brothers who attended and assisted in the Master Mason Degree at Sanford Lodge No. 62. Thank you Junior Warden Mike Hindley for the fine job you did as Worshipful Master for the Degree. Worshipful Master Walter Layton called me to inform me that the ballot on the merger with Daytona Lodge No. 270 was unanimous.  And Secretary Worshipful A. J. Winterwerp called to tell me that the resolution was now on its way to the Grand Lodge for their approval and the Grand Master’s signature. One of our Lodge visitors that calls our Lodge his second home over the winter, Worshipful Jim Kelley lives here in Lockport NY. Bonnie and I met with him and his wife for lunch and he had nothing but praise for our Lodge and the Brothers. We went to Canada to see Worshipful Gary Price and is wife Marilyn and attended his Masonic Lodge in Midland Ontario where I was well received. I miss all my brothers and would love to hear from you when you have a minute .

Fraternally,

Senior Warden Mark King

Sickness and Distressed

Brothers, Brother Hines checks his computer every evening and loves getting messages, though he usually does not type replies due to his physical limitations. Michael can type a couple of words to acknowledge receipt, but that’s about it and it’s a huge effort to do so. So, if any Brothers ca find time to stop by, drop him a card, or email line to say Hi, to our Lodge Brother. He reads all the Trestle Boards posted and keep up with all that is going on in our District. He remains a faithful Master Mason even though he is restricted to his room almost every hour of each day, so please take a moment and help make his day a bit brighter.   Address, and email is Ocean View Nursing Home, 2810 S. Atlantic Ave., New Smyrna Beach Fl. 32169 Attn. Michael Hines Room 629 mlhines22@hotmail.com.

Brother Winterwerp’s son battling cancer, Brother Lawrence’s wife,

Brother, please contact the Secretary if you know of a Brother or his family who needs our prayers and concerns, leave a message and it will get into the Trestle Board and Meeting Minutes.

THE BUILDING OF NEW SMRYNA’S TEMPLE

Continued: The years 1913 and 1914 passed without special events. The Lodge was busy with Degree work and charitable projects. One of the Brothers raised in 1914 was J. S. Duss Jr., a local attorney. He became active in the Lodge soon after he was raised and would play and important role in building the Temple. On June 7, 1915, the subject of building a Temple again came up. Brother Duss made a motion which was tabled that $20.00 of every $30.00 collected in application fees be set aside in a building fund. The motion was not again discussed. On September 4th, 1916, a committee reported that the most feasible way to raise funds to build a Temple would be to issue bonds t Masons. A committee was appointed to prepare and handle this bond issue. A motion prevailed that a committee of five be appointed as a building committee. On September 18th, 1916, the finance committee reported that in order to proceed with a bond issue it would be necessary to incorporate. Two motions prevailed one that the Lodge form a corporation. Brother J. S. Duss Jr., with Brothers Brunson and Chilton were appointed to that committee. On October 2, 1916, a motion prevailed to increase fees to $15.00 per degree. On January 29, 1917, a motion prevailed to pay preliminary expenses of the Masonic Building Association. At the same time, the City of New Smyrna was granted permission to lay a sewer line across the north end of the Masonic lot. This year for the first time the Lodge enjoyed electric lights in the Lodge room. The usual electric bill was $2.00 per month. On August 6, 1917, a motion prevailed to lower the fee for Degree to the original $10.00. To be Continued

From the East

Brothers, it is the beginning of Summer and we will now be “gray” for 3 Months. Meetings will be held only on the 3rd Monday of the Month for July, August, and September, to resume with bi-Monthly meeting in October. Grand Lodge went very well with our Senior Warden, Mark King, Junior Warden, David Drake, and myself representing our Lodge. We voted for legislation the way our lodge discussed at our meeting. We now have R:.W:. Donald Tucker representing our District and Lodge as our DDGM and look forward in working with him this year. Also, our district has been changed from the 16th Masonic District to the 13th Masonic District due to consolidation. Our District hasn’t changed much, only the loss of Bunnell Lodge to another District. The Grand Masters official visit to the 13th District will be June 24th at Sanford Convention Center, followed by the meeting at Sanford Lodge. We have a lot of members that will be away, including our Senior and Junior Wardens. I encourage all members to attend this momentous event and bring your wives or girlfriends to show great support for our new Grand Master Richard Hoover. This is a great Dinner and Meeting and its Free! Please come out and show support, and I’ll see you there. The electric project at the lodge is almost completed and we should come in well below our projected budget. We have a couple other projects in the works that we might proceed with due to that fact.

Lastly, we have a Master Masons dinner coming up at our Lodge on July 5th. This year the meeting are traveling from Lodge to Lodge for each meeting. Please come out and enjoy dinner and fellowship. Dinner at 6pm, meeting at 7pm. Learn what’s going on in our District!

Fraternally, WM:. Walter G. Layton

From the West

Hello, my brothers, your Officers attended the Grand Lodge Communication in Orlando at the Rosen Plaza Hotel. We were not alone, all but 3 Florida Lodges attended. There were over 1300 Master Masons and more than 800 voting Delegates present. We were told that there were 200 more Master Masons attending this year than attended last year’s Communication that was held in Jacksonville. The Officers of your Lodge voted as the Craft had indicated, and here are the results of the voting.  The requirement to have any Brother nominated and elected to the Junior Wardens position must complete Master Mason exam 1, 2, 3 and pass. The committee on work was expanded from 15 to 18 members passed. To help fill the Masonic home, non-masons will be allowed into the Masonic home under the private pay plan, passed. The change to our election; nominations for Lodge Officers must be submitted by no later than the first of November and none will be excepted after that date, passed. Dual members in Florida may now be add to the list of eligible members to sign a petition for a U. D. Lodge. To help the secretaries and reduce the paper only one copy of a by-law change will be needed to be sent to the Grand Lodge passed. Resident guests in the life care plan at the Masonic home are not required to be placed on emeritus status if they are already dues and per capita exempt passed. This may not answer all your questions about the new dues cards but will help with some. Permanent dues cards will now carry the Grand Secretary signature and the requirement for the Lodge Secretary’s to issue annual dues cards to Perpetual or Life members is rescinded, passed.  This is a move that may help with lodges considering mergers or consolidations. Particular Lodges must hold any property in the name of the Lodge set out in its Charter or in the name of a Masonic center association no other name authorized, passed. And great news for our newly named Majestic 13th District R:.W:. Tommy L. Turllington was elected Junior Grand Warden. Our own Brother, R:.W:. Donald H. Tucker is the new District Deputy Grand Master of the new 13th Masonic District. R:.H:. Tracy Chastain from Sanford Lodge 62 is the new District Instructor. For those who have not noticed Senior Deacon Robert Wheeler has made a very welcome addition to the lodge. On the second floor outside the Lodge Room is a great addition, a water cooler. Thank you, Senior Deacon Wheeler. Being a member of New Smyrna Chapter NO 3 of the Eastern Star, I want to thank all my Brothers for the help with the Eastern Star’s official visit dinner. It was awesome, what an outstanding show of support, thank you. Things are moving quickly in the merger with Daytona 270. The Resolution was read at both Lodges for the first reading and were accepted. Now it will be held over for the proper time period, put in the Trestle Board and voted on at our July Stated Communications. Enjoy the summer

Fraternally,

Senior Warden Mark King

A note from our Chaplin

A.J. & Steve
Could you please see that this contact information gets put in the Trestle Board so our brothers can visit and or contact brother Hines. Brother Hines checks his computer every evening and loves getting messages, though he usually does not type replies due to his physical limitation.
Michael can type a couple of words to acknowledge receipt, but that’s about it and it’s a huge effort to do so.
So if you can not find time to stop by, drop him a card, or an e-mail line to say “HI” to our N.S. Lodge 149 brother. He read all of the Trestle Boards posted and keeps up with all that is going on in our district; he remains a faithful Master Mason even though he is restricted to his room almost every hour of each day, so please take a moment and help make his day a bit brighter.

THE BUILDING OF THE TEMPLE

Continued: A Special Communication was held on January 19th, 1912, to discuss building a Temple. A new Committee was appointed to confer with several builders to get their best terms to construct the Temple. During these discussions, an offer was made to the Lodge by Brother George H. Werfelman to trade his lot on the northeast corner of Canal and Orange Streets for the one owned by the Lodge on the southeast corner of Canal and Orange Streets. On February 23rd, 1912, the Lodge accepted the offer from Brother Werfelman of his lot on the northeast corner of Canal and Orange Streets. The deed was prepared and delivered at a cost of $1.50. On June 17th, 1912, a motion prevailed to sell the property on Canal Street for the sum of $2000.00 and the provision that the buyer build a two-story building with a Lodge room on the second floor within one year of the date of transfer. The sale did not take place, However, Brother Werfelman did build on the southeast corner of Canal and Orange Streets and provided a Lodge room on the second floor. The Lodge moved to this new building in October 1912 and remained there until April 1927, at an initial rental of $30.00 per month. The year 1912 ended with 71 members. The dues were still $3.00 per year. The minutes over these early years reflect the charitable work of the Lodge to be generous beyond its small income. Every request for help was responded to in some way. Letters almost always got a $2.00 donation, sometimes as much as $25.00. In 1906, $40.00 ws sent to the victims of the San Francisco disaster. Many times, loans were made of up to $75.00 to Brothers who had fallen on hard times. Hospital and doctor bills were paid and the funeral expenses for on Brother’s wife was paid at a cost of $200.00. By the standards of today, those amounts seem paltry, by the standards of those days, it is easy to see that those Brethren were willing to dig deep into their pockets when the need arose.   To be Continued

From the West

Greetings my brothers;

Hello, my Brothers, our Lodge had the privilege of raising 6 Brothers to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason May 13th, 2017. Support came from 7 Lodges in our district making it an outstanding Degree. Many thanks go out to all the Brothers who made this possible, and participated in the Degree. We have Daytona 270 Lodge to thank for lending the costumes for the Degree. This was awesome and made the Degree even more special for the new Brother Master Masons. As you all well know, the Lodge will be dropping down one meeting a month which will be held on the third Monday of the month. This will start in July and run thru September. The Eastern Star Chapter No 3 will be going dark July, August, and September. The Grand Communication is being held in Orlando and is open to all Master Masons. Your lodge officers have made you aware of the proposals to be voted upon, and are going to vote as you have indicated. The Grand Masters official visit is being held on June 24th in Sanford where our own Brother RH. Donald Tucker will be the new DDGM of the 13th district. He is hoping for a good turn out from our Lodge to show support. Worshipful Walter Layton presented Worshipful Bryan Bassett’s daughter with a check for the Melissa Bassett Scholarship in the amount of $2000.00, and one from the same Scholarship for $1000.00 for Kolin Scott Gallaway. The two scholarships were presented at new Smyrna Beach High School.  I am hoping to go to New York to see my children and grandchildren over the summer, but the Senior Wardens chair will not be left unattended, nor the duties of my office. I will only be a phone call away. The heat of summer is here my brothers, and the schools are out.  Keep a watchful eye out for our children as you travel.

 THE BUILDING OF THE TEMPLE

Continued: On October 18th, 1909, a motion prevailed to accept an offer from the Lowd family to lease the store building at the corner of Julia and Faulkner Streets for three years at $15.00 per month.

January through May of 2010 was spent in refurbishing the new Lodge room. Twenty-five yards of carpet and ten cuspidors were bought. Twenty-five dollars was paid on a “second hand” piano. The first floor of the building was painted and rented to the Foster Company for $12.50 per month. Biological Brothers F. W. Sams, Charles Sams and Murry Sams were all raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason at the same time on September 5th, 1910. There was no discussion regarding the building of a Temple recorded in 1910. Apparently, all plans to raise money had failed. The year 1911 passed in the normal business of the Lodge and it was not until September 4th, of that year that the building of a Temple came up. A Special Communication was called for September 12th. That communication apparently never took place, and there was no further mention of the subject in 1911. The Lodge closed the year with 75 Members.

     From the East

Here we are approaching May already. The lodge is moving forward with good things happening. I am so proud of my officers which makes this year so far very much a success. We have made a substantial amount of money from our breakfasts and dinner and have proposed giving a 2nd scholarship to a worthy student from New Smyrna Beach High School. Same will be chosen by W:. Brian Bassett at an upcoming meeting.

The merger with Daytona #270 is moving forward. We have a lot of paperwork and approvals to be done before that can happen but it is in motion.   I look forward to being a part of making that happen.

The Grand Lodge is approaching on May 29th through the 31st. We have a lot of legislation to vote on and will do same in the best interest of the lodge. We have a member of New Smyrna Lodge that just might be the districts next Right Worshipful?

Also, on that note the New Grand Masters official visit will be in June this year and will be hosted in Sanford. Let’s have a great showing and welcome the new Grand Master into our district with style!

On a personal note, I would like to thank all the Brothers and Wives who called, visited, and prayed for my Wife Edie. For those who don’t know, she was involved in a serious MV accident and had her C-1 and C-2 Vertebrates fractured. She is home resting and healing now with a “halo” that she has to wear for 8 weeks. She is upbeat and positive about the outcome. Again, Thank You everyone!

Lastly, we have a Master Mason’s Degree coming up on the 13th of May and have 5 Brothers to be raised. I ask all brothers to come out and support the new brothers.

Walter Layton,

Worshipful Master

From the West

Greetings my brothers;

As the lodge approaches the half way point in the year with the Grand Communication only a short time away. we need to look at the proposed legislation to be voted on. The proposed changes are available in the Secretary’s office. Please take the time to look them over and let your Officers know what your thoughts are so they can make your wishes known. The Easter Extravaganza was a success thank to the overwhelming support of our brothers. I cannot thank you enough. As you are all aware we are putting on a Master Mason Degree on Saturday May 13th, at 9am with breakfast at 8am at the lodge. This Master Mason Degree will be very exciting as it will be done in full costume thanks to Daytona Lodge 270 who are loaning us their costumes. We are planning to have up to 6 brothers go through the Degree, 4 from our Lodge, 1 from Daytona 270, and 1 from Ormond 326. I hope to see all my brothers there to experience it, and take part in the Degree. If you are interested in taking a part in it please contact the Secretary or myself, we will need all the help we can get. At our last Stated Communication Worshipful Allan Woodstock stated that his Lodge; Daytona 270 has agreed to sell their building and that they are going forward with their plans to merge with New Smyrna 149. This is a win, win for both our Lodges. We get some fantastic Brothers and they get a great Lodge to support them. I know they feel very welcome at our Lodge. I am very proud of our new Brothers who have taken on new positions when given the opportunity. Our future is assured by these Brothers and their willingness to take part. Last but by far not least, school is about to end for the summer break. Be aware that our children will be out and about with all the outdoor activities. Keep them in mind as you travel on our roads, and let’s keep them safe.

Lodge History Continued:

                                                                        THE BUILDING OF THE TEMPLE

Lodge meetings were very lengthy in those days. A separate ballot had to be taken for each degree as a candidate progressed. Practically all Degree work was done at a Stated Communications. The discussions on building were all recorded as being long and thorough. On February 18th, 1907, several building lots were offered to the Lodge. The offer of Brother B. F. Chilton of the lot on the southeast corner of Canal and Orange streets for $600.00 was accepted. On March 4th, 1907, the soliciting committee reported that $234.00 had been collected and offered the Brethren an opportunity to subscribe. A committee was appointed to secure plans, specifications, and bids to construct a building 50 X 80 feet, three stories high. On June 11th, 1907, the Lodge had collected $400.00 in donations. A motion prevailed to draw the additional $200.00 from the Treasury and pay Brother Chilton for the lot. Thus, the Lodge owned it’s building lot and the remainder of the year was spent discussing plans and specifications for the building of a Temple. The year 1908 was a busy one. Degree work conducted at every meeting. The Lodge also did a lot of charitable work as many requests were made from indigent Brothers. Some effort was made to raise money for the building but without success. On March 16, 1908, the idea of a stock company was raised. However, 11908 ended with no progress on the building fund.

The year 1909 began with 55 members. Although the Lodge was busy with Degree work, the membership only increased to 61 by the end of the year. It is interesting to note that the Lodge paid the District Deputy his expenses for his official visit on January 4th, 1909, This was done on an occasional basis, but did not show in the minutes of other years to be a rule. Many request were received by the Lodge from indigent Brothers. On August 2nd, 1909, several motions prevailed to revive the effort to build a Temple. New building and soliciting committees were appointed. The soliciting committees were appointed to explore the possibility of selling stock in the new attempt to raise money. On August 16th, 1909, it was decided to build a building at the cost of $10,000.00. It ws further decided that a stock company would be formed and that the members would be given thirty days to purchase $10,000.00 in stick before it was offered outside the Lodge. At a Special Communications on August 23rd, 1909 a charter for a Building Association was accepted and five directors appointed. There was nothing further reported regarding the building in 1909. To be Continued.

From the West

Greetings my brothers;

Spring is here, and with it the fact that we will soon be losing our Brothers from the north. That doesn’t mean the lodge meetings are any less attended.  We have many out of town visitors that continue to come. The Fellow Craft degree was a great example of that, with 47 brothers in attendance. The trip to Grand Lodge in Jacksonville had to be postponed for now due to scheduling conflicts. But we are still hopping to make it happen sometime after Grand Lodge Communications in May. I will keep everyone updated when we can get a date that works for all. As I said the fellow Craft degree we had this month was a success passing four brothers with many there to support them. Our Junior Warden David Drake did a good job for his first time being in the East, including many of our new brothers first time taking part in a degree. It was great to have these brothers stepping up to take part. The month of April is going to be busy. On April 1st, we will be hosting a Masonic leadership training class at 930am presented by Brother Mike Hindley of Sanford Lodge No. 62. Our regular stated meeting on April 3rd and on April 15th, and our Easter Extravaganza, with the Masonic Child ID and the Easter Bunny being present. The Easter Extravaganza is a FAMILY event for our Lodge and the community. We will need help from the ALL Brothers to make these events happen. Please plan to attend, and if possible bring a Brother and his family who hasn’t been to the lodge for some time. They will not be disappointed. I am working on another fishing trip raffle along with our Senior Deacon Robert Wheeler. We hope to have the details and tickets available for everyone by the second meeting in April. With your help, I hope to make it as successful as the last raffle we had last fall. My Brothers enjoy spring because before you know it the heat of summer will soon be here.

Mark King Senior Warden

Lodge History Continued:

THE BUILDING OF THE TEMPLE

Continued: The Lodge began in 1906 with 47 members and dues were $3.00 per year. The fees were $10.00 for each Degree. With this income, building a Temple would prove to be difficult task. On February 19th, 1906 Brother Smith made his report, including building plans. After a long discussion, a motion prevailed, limiting the expenditure for a building to $300.00. Another motion prevailed adding Brother A. C. McCall to the soliciting committee with a salary of $100.00, provided he succeeded in getting the building built. The Lodge moved from Mary Street School to the newly rebuilt Dohn Feed Store on Faulkner Street in April 1906, where it remained until 1909. No further progress was reported on the building in 1906. On January 21, 1907, Brother R. S. Nelson was appointed a committee of one to devise a ways and means of raising money to build a Temple. He recommended borrowing the money to build a Temple and a committee was appointed to find a building lot. On March 4th, 1907, the soliciting committee reported that $235.00 had been collected and offered the Brethren an opportunity to subscribe. A committee was appointed to secure plans specifications and bids to construct a building 50 X 80 feet, three stories high.  To be Continued

The Worshipful Master requests your attendance at our Stated Communication March 6th and 20th 2017

gold  From the East

Brothers All,

Brothers, February is about to end and we have got a lot accomplished during the Month. On our first stated communication, February 6th, we had the local Boy Scouts Troop #429 join us for dinner and our flag presentation. We had 11 boy scouts and 4 Scout Masters and fathers. They did an outstanding job and presented us with Masonic pins for our Brothers at the lodge. If you have not received one, stop by the lodge and we will present you with one.

On February 13th, 7 of our members traveled to Mokanna Lodge #329 for a 60-year presentation for one of our members Father, Robert Wheeler. The Grand Master was there and did the presentation to him and a 70-year member. There were approximately 70 Brothers in attendance for that momentous occasion. The food was great and the Fellowship was outstanding. If you haven’t been to Mokanna Lodge, you are missing out. They did a great job with the presentation and meeting.

On February 10, we had our first dinner, chicken pot pie, followed by bingo. It was a great success with 52 people making it for the festivities.

On February 11th, we had Masonic Leadership Training at the lodge conducted by Brother Mike Hindley. If you missed this one he will be conducting part 2 on April 1st @ 9:30am. Come out and enlighten yourselves!

We will be having our next stated communication on March 6th, and another called communication on March 20th to conduct a Fellowcraft Degree. We have 4 Brothers of New Smyrna Lodge that will be Passed to the Degree of Fellowcraft. Come on out and support our new Brothers.

Walter Layton,

Worshipful Master

From the West

Brothers of New Smyrna Lodge 149,

The good news is we are about to enjoy spring, one of the best times of year here in Florida. The lodge continues to grow we added another entered apprentice, and a Past Worshipful Master from a nearby lodge. Along those lines we have 4 brothers awaiting their Fellow Craft Degree. The Fellow Craft Degree is planned for our second meeting March 20th 2017. We will need 3 conductors for this degree. If you are interested in taking part please contact the Worshipful Master or the Secretary. April 1st, 2017 at 930 am we will have a Masonic Leadership Class at our lodge. Brother Mike Hindley from Sanford Lodge 62 will continue his class. This class is open to all Master Masons in our district. Please spread the word and come out to the class, refreshments will be available The Easter extravaganza will take place on April 15th at our lodge. Put this event on your calendar and plan to be there to help We gave out over 300 hotdogs last year so we do need help. The first dinner our Worshipful Master held was an outstanding success. The bingo game that was held after was great fun and many were asking when we were going to do it again. We are putting together a trip to the Grand Lodge of Florida in Jacksonville. The date is April 22nd and lunch at Grand Lodge will be provided by Most Worshipful Lynn the Grand Secretary. We will be at our Lodge to carpool up and leaving from our Lodge at 8:30 am.

Lodge History Continued:

                                                                        THE BUILDING OF THE TEMPLE

                                                                                                1906-1927

At the first Stated Communications in 1906 held on February 5th at the Public School on Mary Street, the idea of buying land and building a permanent home for the Lodge was born. The following motion prevailed: “that Brother D. P. Smith be appointed a committee of one to secure plans and specifications and estimates on Lodge Room 30 X 60 also 35 X 70 and report at our next regular communication, if possible”. From this motion the task began. Efforts to complete the Temple spanned twenty-two years. As the history unfolds, it becomes apparent that the efforts made to complete this task dominated the work of the Lodge. For that reason, I chose the title “THE BUILDING OF THE TEMPLE,” as a background against which to present this period of our history.

From the East

Brothers All,

What a great installation to start off 2017! We had about 100 guests and a large number were also from other lodges in our district. I am very proud of the installation team of Installing Officer: RH:. Donald Tucker, Installing Chaplain: RW:. Sam Guarneri, and Installing Marshall: W:. A.J. Winterwerp. I also want to thank all the past Masters that sat in chairs for the installation, and the new officers joining me to make New Smyrna Lodge #149 a better lodge this year. Since our installation, the officers of NS#149 and myself have made all the other installations in our District. I hope they continue to support us at our lodge as we will be supporting them throughout the year in theirs. Our January 16th meeting, we had the honor of having the Grand Master, Most Worshipful Stanley L. Hudson join us for a great dinner and presenting T.C. Wilder with his 65-year membership pin and plaque. The members of NS #149 also presented T.C. with an apron for his service. Thank you to all of the Brothers that made it out for that momentous occasion. We had 62 Brothers in our meeting for the presentation. What a great tribute to T.C. On January 28th, we had another breakfast with a total of 103 people attending and supporting us. We also picked the winner of the TV raffle at the end of the breakfast. We will be having our next meeting on February 6th with some local Boy Scouts joining us for dinner and the Flag Presentation. We will also be joined by members of the Scottish Rite who will give a presentation. On February 20th, we will be having a special communication and conferring an EA degree on one of our candidates in waiting and possibly a few more from other lodges. I am very excited about this year and hope our Brothers will come out and join in with the activities.

Walter Layton

Worshipful Master

From the West

Brothers of New Smyrna Lodge 149,

2017 has begun, and the Lodge is off to a fantastic year. The first breakfast was an overwhelming success. The only way it could have been better is getting more of our brothers to help. The TV raffle worked out very well, and I thank you for all your help with the ticket sales. The money generated will be used for Masonic Education in our Lodge. Worshipful Master Layton has many good things planned for our Lodge, but they will require your support to get them done. A chicken and dumplings dinner for only $10.00 with bingo and prizes to follow will be held on February 10th from 6pm to 9pm.This is something that will require brothers to make happen. Put this on your calendar and be sure to be there. We need to sell tickets so we know how many to prepare for. I am sure it will be a great night for all if we can get the word out. Please help get the tickets sold. Contact an Officer of the Lodge or call 386-426-8286 for tickets and more information. On February 11th, 2017 at 930am a Masonic Leadership training class will be held at our Lodge by Brother Mike Hindley from Sanford #62 Lodge. This is an opportunity not to be missed and refreshments will be available during that presentation. Please be sure to attend. All Master Masons are invited to attend. There will be an EA degree on February 20th, at our second meeting of this month, come out and support the new brother, let them know who we are and that they have made the right choice to become a Master Mason. The fire escape is almost finished, the brothers who helped with this project saved the lodge a lot of money and are owed great thanks, it was not an easy job.

Thank you

Lodge History Continued:

The first minutes of a Stated Communication after the fire were recorded on November 6th, 1905. The Lodge had arranged for a temporary meeting place in the Rush Building on Orange Street. The Lodge immediately began the work of recovery at this meeting. A motion prevailed to meet in Room Number 3 of the Public-School Building on Mary Street until a more suitable arrangement could be made, Several Motions prevailed to appoint a “soliciting committee,” “ways and means committee,” allow the secretary to buy supplies, and to purchase new paraphernalia. Grand Master Johnson was asked for his dispensation to allow the Lodge to send out a letter asking the other Lodges for donations because of our loss by fire. The Grand Master rejected this request. His reasons were not recorded. On December 18th, 1905, W. S. Hart was elected Worshipful Master for 1906, his fifth term. This meeting closed the year 1905. Thus, the history of our first ten years also comes to a close.

The Worshipful Master requests your attendance at our

Stated Communication January 2nd & 16th

gold

     From the East

Brothers All,

I would first like to say, “Thank You”, from the bottom of my heart for electing me to be your Worshipful Master for 2017.   This is a great honor and very humbling that you would entrust this great lodge to me.   I will put my heart and soul into the running of the lodge and hopefully, with the help of the brethren, make it a great place for all to share.   I would also like to congratulate JW Mark King for his nomination for the West and Brother Dave Drake for his nomination to the South. We also have some new brothers in new positions which make it a very exciting year to come. For the year of 2017 we will continue to have our Monthly breakfasts, bar-b-q’s, and great meals at the meetings. We are also planning a few dinners during the year and hope to have the support of our brothers and the community to make them very successful.   We will be holding our last meeting with outgoing WM Allan Baker on January 2nd and we hope that you all can attend to show him our appreciation for the past year of his work.     January 7th will be our Lodges installation, which will begin at 10am with a hot lunch to follow. Hope to see you all there.

Walter Layton

Worshipful Master Elect

From the West

Brothers of New Smyrna Lodge 149, I thank you for allowing me to serve as your Junior Warden for 2016. I did my best to keep our Lodge moving in a positive direction, meeting the issues we had with the best solutions I was able to find. The lodge has enjoyed a very prosperous year adding new Brothers completing several fund raisers hosting special events and best of all having our brothers earn their Masonic proficiency cards .Our lodge attendance has demonstrated we are on the right track to keep adding new members { how great is that } . 2017 will bring its own challenges which I am sure will be dealt with in the same successfully way. Brothers I am looking forward to serving as your Senior Warden for 2017. I will attend to my duties with the same zeal as I did as the Junior Warden. I would like to wish all my Brothers, and their families, a very Happy Healthy and prosperous New Year

Mark King,

Senior Warden Elect

Brothers,

Sometime over the Christmas weekend the Lodge building was broken into and ransacked. The person/persons broke the side window on the Washington Street entrance. Monday December 26th., was when the break-in was discovered and the police were notified. The police have an active investigation to fined out who it was. The Secretaries office was ransacked and door was damaged. We are still looking and straighten up the office but only things that we know was taken was $1.00 out of the Cuda’s unhooked envelope. Also what ever money was in the Charity Box in the Lodge Room. Also some costume jewelry from the OES tables. Minimal damage was done and have already been repaired. This is just to let the Brothers know and any updates will follow when we get them.

Lodge History Continued:

The Annual Returns provide some information relative to our Charter Members during these first ten years. The following five took their demits

S. Beull- 1897 C. H. Smith – 1898 John Detwiler – 1900

Fred A. Barrett – 1904           C. Goodwin – 1904

Two Brothers died:

Alex A. Berry – Sept. 9, 1899 and George H. Count – July 6, 1904

Marion A. Brunson was first elected Worshipful Master in 1900, and remained active for many years. William S. Hart was serving his fourth term as Worshipful Master in 1905.

  1. L. Dohn served two years as Secretary and four years, including 1905 as Tyler. Gustavus Spliess served as Junior Steward, Senior Steward, Tyler and was Junior Deacon in 1905. Waldemar Grandburg and William Paulson did not hold office but were still members in 1905. W. A. Cook and W. S. Hartley were both suspended for non-payment of dues in 1902. W. S. Hartley’s dues were remitted by the Lodge in 1905. He was reinstated and given a demit. At the close of the first ten years of our history only seven of our sixteen Charter Members remained.

Albeit slowly, the Lodge was growing, when on October 13, 1905 disaster struck! The C. L. Dohn Feed Store burned, and with it all the physical property of the Lodge. Grand Master Charles Ward Johnson was notified. He directed the Grand Secretary to issue a duplicate Charter, and granted the Lodge his dispensation to work without one until it was delivered. The duplicate Charter was issued on October 27, 1905.

CIRCUMSCRIBE

Brothers All,

Circumscribe is here. The instructions are on line and in the Trestle Board for a while so all can use them.

1 To Login to Circumscribe, simply follow these instructions:

2 Open your internet browser

3 Navigate to https://glfl.circumscribe.net

4 Your Grand Lodge number is on your current dues card

5 Enter your initial Username:

6 “FL” + Your Grand Lodge Number +”@changeyourmail.info”

   (Example Fl1234567@changeyourmail.info)

7 You will be immediately prompted to change both your username and password.

Your NEW password must contain 8 characters and 1 number

8 Upon successfully entering both, you will be required to logout, and then log

Back in with your new credentials.

9 Once you have successfully logged back in, navigate to your Masonic profile by selecting “Profile” from the menu items on the left side of the screen. Review your profile and make any appropriate changes to your contact information, and upload a current picture for your new permeant ID card. You must upload your picture prior to December 20, 2016. After this date, you will be sent a dues card without your picture, and replacement cards are $5.00 each. When uploading your picture, use as high a resolution as possible, and your face should be positioned to take up as much of the photo square as possible. You should avoid hats, sunglasses, other individuals or animals in the picture.

10 Be sure to select “Save Profile” to complete the process.

Online help is always available at http://help.circumscribe.net or by clicking the question mark icon on the top right of the Circumscribe dashboard once you are logged in. For additional support please contact me by phone 386-423-2370.
