FROM THE EAST

Brothers, The month of May has been exciting. We awarded our Junior Deacon Jon Bodien’s son Erik with the Melissa Bassett Scholarship. Congratulations Eric! Also, our 3 Fellow Crafts returned a really great proficiency examination and are now scheduled for their Master Mason degree, on Saturday June 23, 2018 at 9am. We are also preparing for an EA degree on June 4th, the first meeting of the month. We presented several service awards to our Brothers that were well deserved. I am very proud and pleased to see so many of our brothers at our meetings, and those who have helped with the practice for our degrees. Please keep in mind that we need a lot of brothers to do a master mason degree, and if you can help in any part, contact the Secretary’s office. Our practices are on Thursday evenings at 6 pm, and you can always be a contributor. I am looking for some articles about Brothers who have been or served on special events in our community and our Lodge. We can add these articles to the Trestle Board, thus keeping our Brothers more informed. Thank you, my Brothers. Have and happy and safe Memorial weekend. Fraternally, Mark King

FROM THE WEST

Greetings Brothers, Masonic Etiquette
As soon as a Brother enters a Masonic Hall to attend a Communication; he comes under the sway of Masonic Etiquette. If he is late he should not indulge in loud talking that may be heard in the Lodge and his demeanor toward other Brethren he may meet there should be courteous and respectful. Here, no more than elsewhere, does Masonry give any man license to take personal liberties with another! This is especially true if any Candidates are present waiting their call to the Preparation Room. This gives them the impression that vulgar conduct, levity, practical joking or other forms of disrespect are countenanced by the Craft. It is a misrepresentation of the Lodge and a discourtesy to the Worshipful Master, who stands to all Candidates, among his many other functions, as a host in the name of his Lodge.
The Tyler has it especially in charge to see that the Ante-Room, observes the same decorum as all other precincts of the Temple. While the principal purpose of his sword is to be a symbol of his duty to keep out cowans and eavesdroppers, it is scarcely a lesser meaning of it that he holds authority to maintain order at the doors, and to see that the portals are not profaned by disrespect. Moreover, the Tyler, if he rightly understands his own art, will see that the Ante-Room is kept clean and in order, the aprons neatly piled, books, newspapers and litter not left scattered about, a fitting place, in short, through which to make entrance into a Masonic Lodge. No person is to be admitted into a Masonic Lodge unless by permission of the Worshipful Master. When a would-be visitor appears, it is the duty of the Tyler to notify the Worshipful Master of the presence of the visitor. The Worshipful Master may appoint a Committee to examine the visitor and report to the Master concerning the visitor’s qualifications. If his documents are in order and if he has convinced the examining Committee that he is a Mason, then, probably, the Worshipful Master will grant him permission to enter. If a Brother is late, he does not enter the Lodge until permission is obtained from the Master through the Tyler and the Junior Deacon for him to do so; before entering he should see that his Apron and other regalia are already properly in place. He should
enter through the Outer Door only, and in a manner to attract as little attention, and to avoid as much confusion as possible. If necessary, the Inner Door should he kept locked except when the preparation room is in use, to prevent Brethren entering and retiring through it, and this applies to Past Masters and Grand Lodge Officers as well as any other Brother. It is for use by Candidates only, and to permit it to be used otherwise is a disturbance or dislocation of the entire system of the ritual. It is the Tyler’s duty to see that this rule is rigidly enforced.

The Worshipful Master requests your attendance at our Stated

Communications May 7th, & May 21st, 2018

emblem

                FROM THE EAST

Brothers,

as you know the Grand Lodge Communication is this month and every Brother is welcome to attend. I believe it is something that all should experience at least once. Keep in mind that your 3 principle officers are your representatives. As such, it is important that you make your thoughts and concerns about the Proposed Legislation known so that your delegates can vote for the best interest of our Lodge. I have been seeking bids for our air conditioner, so we have an idea on its cost when it comes time to replace it. It’s not in our budget this year but will most likely be included in next years. We have one person ready for the Entered Apprentice, and one prospective Entered Apprentice to have an Entered Apprentice Degree soon, along with our 3 Fellow Craft that are soon to be Master Mason. With these Degrees in mind, practice is a requirement and I hope to see more Brothers at our practice. The practices are on Thursday evening at 6pm at the lodge. The electrical project is moving forward, and I am looking forward to its completion. We also will be going dim during the months of July, August, and September with only one meeting a month on the third Monday of these month. We can still have degrees and practice during these months if needed.

Fraternally,

Mark King

Greetings Brothers,

Brothers Some Masonic Education

SUBLIME.  Of an elevating nature, that which causes the mind to complete that which is beautiful and uplifting. The Master Mason degree is referred to as the Sublime Degree.  SO MOTE IT BE.  So may it be, so be it Early Masonic literature often lists an amen, followed by so mote it be, after a prayer. The giver affirming his prayer; the listeners agreeing by either repeating the amen or saying so mote it be.  ORDER OF THE STAR AND GARTER. The highest order of knighthood in England.  ROMAN EAGLE.  The standard representing an eagle carried at the head of each Roman Legion; later a German order of Knighthood established in 1429. CANOPY OF HEAVENS.  Covering of the Lodge. Early Lodges met in the open under the canopy of the heavens. EAR OF CORN.  A symbol of plenty, usually replaced in the USA by a sheaf of wheat.

    Lodge History Continued:

On February 18th, 1924, an offer of $15,000.00 was made for the lot on Canal Street owned by the Lodge. Since this property was controlled by the New Smyrna Temple Corporation, the offer was referred to it and the offer was rejected, the price having been set at $20,000.00. On July 7th, 1924, the city of New Smyrna billed the Lodge $344.63 for covering the canal in front of the Masonic lot. An offer of $16,000.00 for the Masonic lot was rejected on September 1st, 1924, and an offer of $20,000.00 for the lot was rejected on October 6th, 1924. The first indication that the Temple Corporation might not be working out came to light on September 6th, 1924. A motion prevailed to appoint a committee to borrow the money to pay off its obligations and dissolve the Corporation. This committee made no report in 1924. At the end of 1924, Lodge Membership was 199. To be continued

Communications April 2nd, and 16th, 2018

FROM THE EAST

Greetings from the East,

I am so glad the trip to Grand Lodge went well and was well attended. Walter Layton PM  did an outstanding job with the fellow Craft Degree for our 3 Brothers and 1 Brother from St Johns Lodge. You could see that much time and effort was put into practice to make sure it was done right, thank you. Brothers, our next event is the Lodge Easter Extravaganza on March 31st, in conjunction with the city of New Smyrna Beach Easter Egg hunt. Please be sure to attend, we will need all Brothers to participate to make it a success. The first meeting on April 2nd, we presented 1, 40-year Certificate and pin. On April 4th at our Lodge the Master Mason Association will be meeting for dinner at 6pm and meeting at 7pm. Take the time to attend and learn what is going on in the 13th district. The District Deputy Grand Master R:. W:. Donald Tucker will be holding an informational meeting on April 11th at New Smyrna Lodge 149 starting at 7pm about the proposed legislation that the Delegates from our Lodge will be voting on at Grand lodge. It’s a great opportunity for everyone to find out how you want the Lodge to vote. April will be busy as we will be having an Entered Apprentice Degree on our second meeting on April 16th. Practice for the degree will be held every Thursday evening at 6pm starting on April 5th at our lodge please let the secretary know if you can help with the degree.

Mark E. King, Worshipful Master

                                                                                   FROM THE WEST

Greetings Brothers,

I would like to congratulate the new Fellow Craft Brothers and the Degree team for a job well done. I would like you to read a part of an article from the March/April issue of the Scottish Rite Journal

“Is Freemasonry a secret society?”

“Freemasonry is a beautiful system of allegory and illustrated by symbols. We’re not a charity or religion. We do not exist to support others and present no way of salvation. So, how does it make men better? In the degrees, it is explained that we are to be building a temple. Solomon symbolizes-the builder or the most magnificent temple in the history of man. As we strive to build ours, each of us does so differently. I can tell you how to build yours and vice-versa. Remember that Freemasonry is a system of morality. We all take our obligation on the Volume of the Sacred Law because we believe in immortality. Without immortality there is no reason for morality. ”

To find out more read the article.

FROM THE EAST

Hello my Brothers. I am pleased to share all the good news our Lodge has been working on. We have been able to get our dish washer repaired, instruction on the use of the Automatic Electronic Defibrillator, and our building power washed. We’re having 2 breakfasts a month with very good support from our community and Brothers. Our SW Al Woodstock is in the process of replacing the 2 air conditioners in the kitchen. We will try and completing the electrical project and get bids on replacing the build’s air conditioner. We will be taking a road trip to the Grand Lodge in Jacksonville on Saturday March 10th. We will leave from our lodge at 8:30am. Be sure to contact our secretary to let him know you are coming. The Grand Secretary M:. W:. Richard Lynn will provide lunch. This is a great opportunity to visit and see your Grand Lodge, and one that doesn’t” come around very often.  W:. Walter Layton will be doing the Fellow Craft degree at our March 19th Meeting for 3 of our EA’s. Please attend and show your support for these Brothers. One more thing I must share with you, the Brothers who have been helping with the breakfasts could use a break. These Brothers have been at almost every breakfast we have had. I am Hoping to see some new Brothers at our next breakfast which will be on Saturday March 24th. Your support is needed to continue these breakfasts.

Mark E. King, Worshipful Master

FROM THE WEST

Greetings My Brothers,

It’s March and time for Spring. The first meeting March 5 is the time to approve the budget. March 10 we are travelling to the Grand Lodge. Leaving from New Smyrna at 8:30 am. March 13 visiting St Johns 37. We have a Fellow Craft Degree on March 19. We have been meeting on Wednesday evenings to practice for this degree. Hopefully by the time you read this, we will have installed 2 new air conditioners in the kitchen. With the approved budget, we will finish the electrical work and a few other projects that need work. We had the cables on the roof checked out and it looks like they will need to be replaced in 2 to 5 years.

That’s all for now. Take care and be safe.

From the East

Greetings from the East,

My Brothers, the month of January is now history. In that history was our Installation of Officers and the loss of 3 Brothers who passed to the Celestial Lodge above. Brother John William Rogers passed on January 6th, 2018, R:. W:. Harry Rosenthal passed on January 11th, 2018. A Memorial Service was held at our Lodge for R.W. Harry Rosenthal on January 19th, and attended by over 40 Brothers and friends, Brother Seth Rye who had been our Musician and served as the Grand Musician for M:. W:. Steve Boring passed on January 12, 2018. A Memorial Service for Brother Rye will be announced to the Craft when we hear from the family. The loss of these brothers is heartfelt and serves to remind us how close we have all become. The officers have been working on the budget and have budget the money to complete the electrical project and other repairs to the Lodge Building that have been placed on the back burner for some time.  We are very fortunate to have Brothers that are willing to be officers and take on the responsibilities that go along with each position. I have been asked to have the New Smyrna Beach Fire  Department come and instruct our members on the use of the automatic defibrillator.  I am in the process of setting up a time for the Fire Department to come in and train us along with the Eastern Star. We are having practices on Wednesday evenings at 6pm for now along with Daytona 81.  They are practicing for a Entered Apprentice Degree, and we working with our new officers to get them more familiar with their positions. I am planning to have a Fellow Craft Degree on the 2nd meeting in March, 3/19/18. Practice will be starting for this degree soon and any Brothers interested in taking part in this degree should let me know or one of the officers of the Lodge. Brothers, be sure to put March 10th on your calendars, we as a Lodge are visiting The Grand Lodge of Florida in Jacksonville for a tour. We will be leaving New Smyrna Lodge at 9am and lunch will be provided by M:.W:. Lynn, the Grand Secretary, and all are invited. Our northern Brothers are also invited to come. Call or email the Secretary to let us know so M:. W:. Lynn has a count for lunch.

Mark E. King, Worshipful Master

From the West

Greetings My Brothers,

The month of January’s over and February’s upon us.  First things first …., It’s budget time. Your Senior Warden will be presenting the budget at our first Stated Communications in February. Next on the list, we’ll need volunteers to help repair ceilings in the closets upstairs and in the Easters Star’s office. By the first of March we will be replacing the two air conditioners in the kitchen. The Worshipful Master is working on getting the dishwasher repair. Let’s not forget our breakfasts this month. We need volunteers to help with this.

From the East

Greetings from the East,

As my year in the West as the Senior Warden comes to an end, I look back at the many accomplishments our Lodge has completed. Getting the fire escape painted, continuing the very popular breakfasts, our Easter Extravaganza with the Masonic Child ID Program, getting a powered projection screen installed on the north wall of the Lodge Room along with a projector, and completing the successful merger with our Brothers from Daytona Lodge No. 270. These are not small accomplishments. Our lodge has always strived to do more, and I don’t see that changing. I am very proud and humbled that you have elected me as your Worshipful Master for 2018. I will do my best to live up to your expectations as the new Worshipful Master of our Lodge. Remember, it’s not the Worshipful Master who makes the Lodge; it is the members with their commitment and support that makes a Lodge of Master Masons. Come out to the Installation of Officers on January 6th, 2018 at 10:00am. Bring your significant other and enjoy the installation and lunch afterward. Thank you to Worshipful Walter G. Layton, for all the hard work you did in 2017. Last my Brothers, Happy Holiday and I hope you all have a very prosperous and blessed New Year.

Mark E. King

Worshipful Master

I welcome you all and if you have any questions feel free to ask. As your Senior Warden, I fully expect to support you, my Brothers, and our Worshipful Master in all our endeavors for the coming year and all future years. As always, be safe and take care.

Al Woodstock PM,

Senior Warden

THE BUILDING OF NEW SMRYNA’S TEMPLE

Continued: The Lodge was busy with Degree work doing several courtesy Degrees and having many done by other Lodges. Thirty ne Master Masons were raised bringing the membership of the Lodge to 158. The first action taken in 1922 regarding the building of the Temple was on February 20, 1922. A committee was appointed to select a cornerstone. The first effort to secure pictures of all Past Master was ordered on April 17, 1922. The first recorded Past Masters night was held June 5, 1922. A resolution to increase dues to $5.00 per year, effective January 1, 1923 was approved October 16, 1922. No further action was taken in 1922 toward building the Temple. On January 15, 1923 agents for the owner of the building notified the Lodge that the rent would increase from $30.00 to $45.00 per month. The Lodge then set the rent for all organizations using the hall at $5.00 per meeting. On May 21, 1923, a motion prevailed to increase the fees for the Degrees to $20.00 each. On July 5, 1923, a resolution was adopted requesting the New Smyrna Temple Corporation to elect the Worshipful Master, Senior Warden, Secretary, and Treasurer of the Lodge, to be President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer respectively of the Corporation. Worshipful Master D.F. Douglas was named to vote our 291 shares of stock in the New Smyrna Temple Corporation. Another year ended with little progress reported on fund raising to build a Temple.  To be Continued

The Worshipful Master requests your attendance at our Stated Communication December 6th, and December 20th, 2017

     From the East

Brothers all,

The end of the year is here.   This year has flown by and we have accomplished a lot.  At our last meeting we honored our Military members with a special dinner for them for Veterans day. We had 48 Brothers come out for that meeting. It was a very great tribute to them and a great way to say, Thank You to these brothers for their service.

The District Deputy Grand Master’s official visit was November 20th. He brought the Grand Masters message at that meeting and what great support we showed the Grand Master and our very own, R:.W:. Donald Tucker for bringing the Grand Masters word.

The first meeting of December we will have balloting for our 2018 officers. We have Brothers with their names in the hat for officer positions and I’m confident it will be an easy transition into next year with the interested Brothers.

We also have some new Men interested in being initiated into our fraternity. We have several petitions in and will be balloting at our next meeting on these future brothers.  We will be trying to fit in an Entered Apprentice Degree before the end of the year to show these Brothers “The Light”.

Lastly, I would like to thank all the officers for 2017 for making this year a huge success. It really made my year in the East an easy one. I would also like to thank all the Brothers of New Smyrna and other Lodges that came out all year to support our Lodge. The only way a Lodge can survive is with your support and by your showing your support New Smyrna Lodge #149 will thrive.

Thank You all for a great year

W:.M:. Walt G.Layton

From the West

As we end this year my Brothers, we have accomplished much. Adding new members, helping our fellow Lodges, supporting our community, and preparing new Brothers to lead us into the future. My time as your Senior Warden has taught me much, and pointed out my short comings. I have tried to learn from them. Our new Brothers from Daytona 270 have made themselves a part of our Lodge. I for one see it as a great success. New Smyrna Lodge has a bright future and a secure one as well. Our Worshipful Master Walter Layton has made us a Lodge well known among the 13th Masonic District for our degree work and just as important, our fellowship. Attracting new Brothers and retaining are old members as well. The attendance at our meetings tells the story. The average attending at our Communications is 30. Not bad, and the 11/6 Stated Communications we had 47 Brothers present with 3 Petitioners at the Flag ceremony and opening pray. How great it was to look out from my station and see both sides of the Lodge Room filled. The month of December brings with it our elections for the coming year, and the great part is our Lodge will have a full complement of officers. Please remember to bring your dues cards so you can ballot on December 4th our first meeting of the month. I would like to wish everyone of my brothers and their families the best for the holiday season.  Tomorrow is just a day away make the most of today, and share your good fortune with someone you love.

Thank you

Senior Warden Mark King

We have some new petitions coming in and being balloted on.  I would like to have these new interested guys initiated before the end of the year.  We have had a lot going on this year and I would really like to end it on a great note of having some new brothers brought in. Our next meeting, November 6th, our newest raised Brothers will be proving their proficiencies before the craft. Come on out and support these Brothers! Any Brother that is interested in an officer position must have their paperwork in by November 1st. I know we already have a few interested Brothers but if you are interested the time is running short. We also have the DDGM official visit on November 20th, so please come out and support our lodge and the DDGM Donald Tucker, who is a member of our Lodge.  Let’s make him Proud!  Hopefully will see you all at our next Stated Communication on November 6th.

Fraternally,

W:.M:. Walt Layton

                                                                                            From the West

The month of October has been a difficult one for all our members dealing with repairs left from hurricane Irma. Our lodge was spared but, as you all know that was not the case for 2 of the lodges in District 13. This has disrupted not just our Masonic Brothers but, the other appended bodies that used these lodges. New Smyrna Lodge 149 opened its doors for our Brothers in need and have supported them in any way we can, because that’s what Brothers do. It may be some time before Halifax Lodge No.81 may be able to return to their lodge, and Ormond Beach Lodge No. 326 is trying to make use of their Lodge as it is with much difficulty. W:. M:. Walter Layton continues to make our Lodge available to them should they need a place to meet. The merger with Daytona 270 is complete and a success, with the Brothers finding a new home here with us. We had the town hall meeting presented by Senior Grand Warden John Westerman at our Lodge. It was well attended, and many good ideas were offered. The month of November brings with it our District Deputy Grand Masters official visit to our Lodge at our second meeting of this month. Be sure to attend and support our Brother, DDGM Donald Tucker. Soon our snow bird Brothers will return to find many new Brothers that now share our lodge, I am sure they will be happy to be back and to meet them. Brothers, there are many committees to be filled for next year, and your Lodge Needs Brothers to fill the positions. Please let the Secretary know if you would like to serve on one or more of the committees. The holidays are coming with family and friends. This year will be more difficult for many because of the hurricane. If you are able, please donate food by placing it in the basket located at the entry to the dining room. Every little bit helps.

THE BUILDING OF NEW SMRYNA’S TEMPLE

Continued: The year 1919 began on a busy note. In addition to heavy Degree work, the Lodge was the host for its first recorded District Meeting. On March 19th, 1919, a resolution was spread on the minutes and a gold star placed on the service flag in memory of Brother John Mooney, the first of our members to make the supreme sacrifice. He died in combat in France. Nothing had been recorded since January 1917, regarding the building of the Temple until March 19th, 1919, when a Special Communications was called to discuss that matter. I could find no record of that Communication being held. On June 4th, 1919 a motion prevailed to change Stated Communication dates back to the first and third Monday. A special School of Instruction was held here for the first time on October 1st, 1919 with 70 Brothers attending. On October 6th, 1919 a new building committee was appointed to erect a Temple. On November 3rd, 1919 Donald F. Douglas was elected to this Lodge. He was a building contractor and in addition to being a very active Mason, he was the Brother who would eventually build the Temple. The Lodge, for the first time passed the 100 mark in membership closing the year with 107 members. The year 1920 was very busy. Twenty-one ne Master Masons were raised. On June 7th, 1920 a new committee was appointed to seek aid from other Lodges to build a Temple. This effort apparently failed since a report from this committee was never recorded. On July 5th, 1920, Worshipful Master Keatley asked the Lodge to request the Grand Master to relieve him and permit new elections to fill any vacancy that might be created. No reasons were recorded, however, Grand Master Cooper granted the dispensation and on July 28th, 1920 George I,. Fullerton was elected and installed Worshipful Master. He served the remainder of 1920.To be Continued

From the East

Brothers, as I’m sure most of you know by now, hurricane Irma has devastated 2 of the lodges in our13th district.  Ormond Lodge #326, and Halifax Lodge #81 both ended up with severe damage to their buildings. It could be several Months until they are able to repair their lodges for use again. We, at New Smyrna Lodge have been blessed that no damage was sustained to our lodge. We have offered to those lodges, the use of our lodge for their meetings. We have worked on a schedule that will accommodate everyone in need of using our lodge. We will open our doors and our arms in brotherly love until they can get their lodges back in working order. It would be great if all of the brothers involved can support each other during this trying time. On a more positive note, at our last meeting, September 18th, we held the final ballot on the resolution for Daytona Lodge #270 to merge with our lodge. The ballot was unanimous!  That was the final step in making the merger happen.  Our Secretary W:.A.J. Winterwerp and Daytona’s secretary W:. Howard Chase have worked long and hard to make this merger happen. I would like to thank both for making this a reality.  I would also like to thank all the brothers at each lodge who have supported us in this endeavor.  W:. AJ and W:. Chase are going to drive to the Grand Lodge in Jacksonville personally and deliver the paperwork on Thursday the 21st.  The future is looking great! Also, at our last meeting, we had the pleasure of having Boy Scout Troop #436 join us for dinner and the flag presentation. A couple of boys from that Troop came to the lodge after the hurricane and assisted our secretary in cleaning up our grounds.  We also made one of their members, Bryce Sparks, our charity of the month. Bryce is working on a project to attain his Eagle Scout patch.  New Smyrna Lodge donated $100 toward the project with members donating another $338 out of their pockets, totaling $438 toward his project.  I am so proud of our members for stepping up for a great cause!  Good Luck Bryce on your endeavor for the Eagle Scout Patch! Our next Stated communication will be on October 2nd.  Hope to see you all there.

Fraternally,

W:.M:. Walt Layton

From the West

Welcome Brothers from Daytona Lodge No.270.We are happy but sad to see you be part of New Smyrna Lodge. Happy because we together as a Lodge will excel to new and better things. Sad, because of you having to close your doors and merge with us for various reasons. This is a new day for our Lodge. The Lodge is gaining some GREAT Brother! We have a lot going on in our building with the Lodges hit by the hurricane using our Lodge until they can get back into their home Lodges again. Welcome to these Brothers and Sisters also. Don’t forget that elections of Officers are only a few months away. Think seriously about being an officer in 2018. Great things will be happening and be part of it. As you read below in this Trestle Board and see a paragraph that was read for Masonic Education at the last Stated meeting, take time and think about what the paragraph is saying. Be part of your Lodge, voice your opinion, give your officers fresh ideas and direction you want YOUR Lodge to grow and proceed. Remember Brothers, you only get out of Masonry and your Lodge what you put into it. Please get involved.

Fraternally,

Mark King SW

Brothers, this was read at the Stated Communications on September 18th, 2017 and the Brothers present ask for it to be put in the Trestle Board:

DO YOU JUST BELONG?

Are you an active member? The kind that would be missed? Or are you just contented That you name is on the list? Do you attend the meetings and mingle with the crowd? Or do you stay at home and crab long and loud? Do you take an active part and help the Lodge along? Or are you satisfied to be the kind to just belong? Do you ever go to visit a member who is sick? Or leave the work for just a few and talk about the clique? There is quite a program scheduled that means success if done. And it can be accomplished with the help of everyone. So attend the meetings regularly, and help with hand and heart, Don’t be just a member, but take an active part. Think this over, Member, are we right or are we wrong? Are you an active Member? Or DO YOU JUST BELONG!!

The answer I get back is, it is still in the works to get the permanent dues cards out. So, Brothers all I can say is be patient and when I hear any news I will communicate it to the Craft. You can still sign up on Circumscribe by the instructions that are on line or call me at the office and I will help you to sign up. You will still need to sign up for Circumscribe. So, all brother who have not signed up for Circumscribe yet, need to do so.

Mothing had been recorded since January 1917, regarding the building of the Temple until March 19th, 1919, when a Special Communications was called to discuss that matter. I could find no record of that Communication being held. On June 4th, 1919, a motion prevailed to change the Stated Communication date back to the first and third Monday. A Special School of Instruction was held here for the first time on October 1st, 1919 with 70 Brothers attending. On October 6th, 1919, a new building committee was appointed to erect a Temple.

The Worshipful Master requests your attendance at our Stated Communication

September 18th, 2017

gold

                                                                    From the East

We are now almost through August and have one more Month of being “Gray”. We have still had a great turnout at our meetings during this slow time of the year. It is great to see all of the Brothers turning out and supporting our lodge. I personally truly appreciate the Brothers who do continue to support our lodge.

At our last meeting, we voted to accept the resolution from Grand Lodge of Daytona Lodge #270 merging with our lodge, it was a unanimous vote. It is great seeing our Brothers accepting another lodge of Brothers into our lodge and working together in peace and harmony. At our next meeting, September 18th, we will have a written secret ballot to accept the merger. That will be the last process in the merger at which time we will be “one” if accepted.

We will be hosting our Brothers from Daytona #270 on September 13th for their last stated communication to be held at our lodge. We will also provide a welcoming dinner for those Brothers coming to the meeting to show them that we are welcoming them with open arms. Come on out Brothers for this welcoming dinner and show your support for the merger.

I am also very excited to have our SW Mark King and his wife Bonnie back from New York for our next meeting. Mark and Bonnie have been away for the Summer visiting family in upstate New York.

On a sad note, please keep W:.AJ Winterwerp and his Father Carl Winterwerp in your thoughts and prayers at this trying time. They have lost their Brother and Son, Francis Winterwerp, after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Hope to see you all at our next meeting.

Fraternally, W:.M:. Walter G. Layton

                                                                 From the West

Hello brothers,

The merger between Daytona Lodge No. 270 and ours is almost complete and we are about to enter a new and exciting future for our Lodge. The Brothers coming from Daytona Lodge No. 270 adds their strengths to ours making New Smyrna Lodge 149 an unstoppable combination. The future is a blank scrip ready to be written by members of our newly joined Lodges. There is nothing that we cannot accomplish, adding new members, supporting our community, increasing Masonic Education and being able to give relief to those in need. It soon will be time to start thinking about next year and all the officer positions that will need to be filled. Please give some thought to participating in filling these positions. They are open to all Members of our Lodge. On September 13th Daytona Lodge No. 270 will be having there last Stated Communications as Daytona Lodge No.270 at New Smyrna Lodge 149. Be sure to attend and welcome these Brothers into our Lodge. We will have our usual Stated Communication on September 18th with dinner at 6pm and the meeting starting at 7pm. The Senior Grand Warden of Florida has scheduled a town hall meeting on October 11th at New Smyrna Lodge No. 149. Be sure to put it on your calendar and attend to hear what the Senior Grand Warden is going to say. School has started and the school buses are out, remember to stop when you see there flashing lights, our children are future keep them safe.

Fraternally,

Senior Warden Mark King

Brothers All,
Daytona Lodge 270 will hold it’s meeting at New Smyrna Lodge 149 tomorrow September 13th. 2017 at 7:30 pm. There will NOT be a dinner before the meeting but Daytona 270 needs Brothers to sit in chairs. Also this is the meeting where they have their final vote on the merger between our two Lodges.
The Worshipful Master request all Brothers to try and come out and show support for our Brothers from Daytona 270 Lodge.
New Smyrna Lodge came out will very little damage from the hurricane. 1 cracked window pane. We were very fortunate. Read below.
Also Brothers, Ormond Beach 326 sustained heavy damage from a tornado during hurricane Irma. They have requested to meet at our Lodge for their September Meeting and Halifax 81 lost their roof from the hurricane and have requested to meet at our Lodge until they can clean up or figure out what to do.
We have heard from Jobs Daughters who want to meet at our Lodge and are waiting to hear from the Eastern Star from both Lodges. We will keep you all informed about what is going on.
A J Winterwerp PM

THE BUILDING OF NEW SMRYNA’S TEMPLE

Continued: Since being chartered in 1896, the Lodge has been assigned to the 14th Masonic District comprised of the following Lodges, St. Johns 37-Deland, Halifax 81-Daytona Beach, Volusia 77-Barbarville, Brevard 113-Cocoa, Sanford 62-Sanford, New Smyrna 149- NSB, Indian River 90-Titusville. In 1917 the Grand Lodge realigned the Districts and we were assigned to the 20th Masonic District comprising of the same Lodges. Business of the Lodge was routine during the first five months of 1918. While little was recorded in the 1918 minutes regarding the First World War, the effect of it began to surface in June of that year. June 17th, 1918, by dispensation of the Grand Master, a petition was balloted on all three Degrees at the same time. The reason being is that the candidate was in the military and had been ordered to foreign duty. Dispensation was granted that year for several Brothers to be advanced short time. In June, meeting dates were changed from the first and third Monday to the first and third Wednesday. It was now common by dispensation to elect candidates for all three Degrees on the same ballot. In many cases, out-of-state Lodges were asked to confer the Degrees because the candidates were away on military duty. Many Special Communications were held this year to do the work of the Lodge, as well as courtesy work for other Lodges. To be Continued
