Re: Merger of Lodges

Dear Brethren:

In accordance with Regulation 16.04 of the Digest of the Masonic Law of Florida I, as Grand Master, have reviewed the Resolution for the merging of New Smyrna Lodge No. 149 and Halifax Lodge No. 81, with New Smyrna Lodge No. 149 being the continuing Lodge, and find it in order and give my approval for said Resolution to progress according to Regulation 16.04 (d) which states: (d) Upon approval by the Grand Master the Resolution shall be read to the Lodges involved at a stated communication and if approved by majority vote of the members present and voting in each Lodge, the Resolution shall be laid over in each of such Lodges for not less than one month nor more than two months, and if upon due notice it is adopted by three-fourths (3/4) vote of the members present and voting at a Stated Communication of each Lodge involved in the merger, the proceedings for merger shall progress as specified in the order of the Grand Master. Be advised that in order to move forward with the final approval of the merger each Lodge will need to provide copies of the Minutes of the Stated Communications evidencing the remaining required votes by the membership of both Lodges; with the final vote on the Resolution being a written ballot and being adopted by three-fourths (3/4) vote of the members present and voting. While we are saddened that the Lodges are diminishing, we congratulate you for taking this bold step to bring together the resources of these two bodies for the benefit of Freemasonry.

Sincerely and fraternally,

Thomas L. Turlington, Jr.

History of Freemasonry

No one knows with certainty how or when the Masonic Fraternity was formed. A widely accepted theory among Masonic scholars is that it arose from the stonemasons’ guilds during the Middle Ages. The language and symbols used in the fraternity’s rituals come from this era. The oldest document that makes reference to Masons is the Regius Poem, printed about 1390, which was a copy of an earlier work. In 1717, four lodges in London formed the first Grand Lodge of England, and records from that point on are more complete. Within thirty years, the fraternity had spread throughout Europe and the American Colonies. Freemasonry became very popular in colonial America. George Washington was a Mason. Benjamin Franklin served as the head of the fraternity in Pennsylvania, as did Paul Revere and Joseph Warren in Massachusetts. Other well-known Masons involved with the founding of America included John Hancock, John Sullivan, Lafayette, Baron Fredrick von Stuben, Nathanael Greene, and John Paul Jones. Another Mason, Chief Justice John Marshall, shaped the Supreme Court into its present form.

Over the centuries, Freemasonry has developed into a worldwide fraternity emphasizing personal study, self-improvement, and social betterment via individual involvement and philanthropy. During the late 1700s it was one of the organizations most responsible for spreading the ideals of the Enlightenment: the dignity of man and the liberty of the individual, the right of all persons to worship as they choose, the formation of democratic governments, and the importance of public education. Masons supported the first public schools in both Europe and America.

During the 1800s and early 1900s, Freemasonry grew dramatically. At that time, the government had provided no social “safety net”. The Masonic tradition of founding orphanages, homes for widows, and homes for the aged provided the only security many people knew.

Today in North America, the Masonic Fraternity continues this tradition by giving almost $1.5 million each day to causes that range from operating children’s hospitals, providing treatment for childhood language disorders, treating eye diseases, funding medical research, contributing to local service, and providing care to Masons and their families at Masonic Homes. The four million Masons worldwide continue to help men and women face the problems of the 21st century by building bridges of brotherhood and instilling in the hearts of men ideals for a better tomorrow

LETTER FROM THE GRAND MASTER OF FLORIDA

May 22, 2020 To: All Particular Lodges and Members of The Grand Lodge of Florida Dear Brothers: With the recent news that the Governor is lifting restrictions throughout our great state, I have been informed that once R\W\ Thomas L. Turlington, Jr., Deputy Grand Master, is installed as Grand Master, he will lift the restrictions to the Lodges noted in my Directive No. 4. A letter from the Deputy Grand Master will also be sent out stating this and will list some suggestions that the Lodges should take into consideration. All Lodges will be able to resume normal Lodge Meetings and events that were laid out in my Directive No. 4 such as, but not limited to, all Masonic Education/Masonic Leadership Training Classes, Secretaries and Treasurers Seminars, Child ID Events, Social Gatherings, all Allied and Appendant Orders and Masonic Youth Groups that meet in any Lodge buildings, and Lodge building rentals. My decisions to suspend Lodge activities and cancel our 191st Annual Grand Communication were certainly not easy decisions to make. My intention, my Brothers, was to keep you and your family’s safe and healthy during this unexpected pandemic. As a Grand Master I am presented difficult challenges to overcome every day and they are met with thorough thoughts and actions. Please know that every decision made was for the betterment of the Craft. In closing I would just like to thank you my Brothers for the opportunity to serve as your Grand Master. The many kindnesses and courtesies that you have bestowed upon myself and Sudy has been unwavering and we appreciate and thank each one of you.

Sincerely and fraternally, John W. Westerman, III Grand Master.

FROM THE DEPUTY GRAND MASTER OF FLORIDA

Re: Coronavirus Update

Opening Lodges Dear Brothers: Everyone has heard that the Governor has started to lift restrictions throughout the state due to the flattening of the Coronavirus curve. I am pleased to announce that all Lodges may open to regular Lodge business on June 1, 2020. All Lodges must adhere to their By-Laws, Section 5.01 – Stated Communications. We encourage all Lodges to follow the health and safety guidelines as set forth by the Center for Disease Control. All Lodges must have a hand sanitizing station at the front door of the Lodge Building for Brothers to use upon entering. If Brothers wish to wear gloves and masks they may do so but this is not a mandatory requirement and the Brothers must provide their own personal protective equipment. The safety of our Brothers and their families are our top priority. Please continue to practice “social distancing” and following the guidelines that have been set by the Center for Diseases Control. Use common sense and your best judgement. If you are sick, have a fever, or just don’t feel good please do not come to Lodge. If you feel it is in the best interest to not open your Lodge and hold Stated Communications please notify your membership and the Grand Secretary. Please forward this letter to your Lodge Membership as proper notification of opening of the Lodges on June 1st, 2020. As always. Feel free to contact myself or any of the Grand Lodge Officers should you have any questions or concerns. Take due notice and govern yourself accordingly.   Sincerely and fraternally, Thomas L. Turlington Jr. Deputy Grand Master

FROM THE SOUTH

Hello, from the south my Brethren.

Fraternally, Bob Segarra. Junior Warden

LODGE REOPENING:

Brothers, the reason the Lodge is not opening for the June 1st, 2020 Stated Communication is so that the lodge can have proper protection in place. FROM THE SECRETARY’S DESK

Brothers, for those who have paid you dues, thank you. For those who have misplaced the dues notice or can not remember if you have paid your dues please call the Secretary and I will check and let you know if you have or haven’t. For those Brothers who want to pay with credit card PLEASE call me at the Lodge number and I can enter the information for you. We are having problems with Circumscribe. It is not that the money does not get to us but that we have no record of who pays through Circumscribe. They have stopped the weekly emails with the Brothers names and amounts paid. Grand Lodge is aware of the situation and is trying to correct it. Every time we get the bank statement with a payment from circumscribe, we call Grand Lodge and complain. If you pay though circumscribe, please drop an email to me so I can send you your dues card and mark you as dues paid.

THE COMMUNICATIONS FOR MAY 2020

HAVE BEEN CANCELLED BY

THE GRAND MASTER OF FLORIDA

FROM THE GRAND MASTER OF FLORIDA

DIRECTIVE NO. 4 April 24, 2020

To: All Particular Lodges and Members of The Grand Lodge of Florida In consequence of the ongoing orders set out by the Governor of the State of Florida concerning the coronavirus pandemic, as Grand Master, I hereby ORDER AND DIRECT that effective immediately all Stated and Called Communications, Masonic meetings and events are suspended until at least June 1, 2020. This suspension includes, but is not limited to, all Masonic Education/Masonic Leadership Training classes, Secretaries and Treasurers Seminars, Child ID Events, Social Gatherings, all Allied and Appendant Orders and Masonic Youth Groups that meet in any Lodge buildings, and Lodge building rentals. If a Brother is working with a candidate on catechisms outside the Lodge building, continuing to get together for instruction is up to the individuals; however, they should practice “social distancing” and following the guidelines set by the Center for Disease Control. This Directive should be forwarded to your Lodge membership and may be considered proper notification. My Brothers, this situation continues to be fluid and moving very fast. The safety of our Brothers and their families shall be the priority and please use common sense and be safe. Take due notice and govern yourselves accordingly.

Sincerely and fraternally,

John W, Westerman III

LETTER FROM THE GRAND MASTER OF FLORIDA

To: All Members of the Particular Lodges of The Most Worshipful Grand Lodge F. & A.M. of Florida,

Good Afternoon My Brothers: I am quite certain all of you are wondering about our upcoming Annual Grand Communication. The Grand Master has a multitude of responsibilities; however, in my opinion none of those responsibilities should ever surpass his duty to the well-being and protection of the Craft. After careful consideration and consultation with our Grand Lodge Leadership Team I can tell you we are of like mind. I believe conducting our Annual Grand Communication at a central location as we have done in the past would incur significant risk thereby compromising the health and well-being of many in attendance. Therefore, I am informing all that for the first time since World War II in 1945 I am canceling our 191st Annual Grand Communication. I should be direct and let all know that all the Grand Lodge Officers are aware of my decision and concur. An Executive Order in conjunction with this letter concerning the 191st Annual Grand Communication is forthcoming. Our partnership with the Rosen Plaza Hotel and its staff as always has been exceptional. They understand the risks involved and once again have been great to work with. There will be no cost incurred by our Grand Lodge from the hotel as a result of this decision. The Delegates from each Lodge as well as other eligible voters will be receiving further communications from the Office of the Grand Secretary regarding how we will ensure that all individuals entitled to vote will have the opportunity via an electronic means. Additionally, a paper ballot will be provided for those unable to vote electronically. Specifically, the voters will ballot on our Grand Lodge Officers along with procedural reports associated with the election and approve the 2020-2021 Proposed Budget these Officers will operate under in the coming year. We will postpone the consideration of the Proposed Legislation and other pertinent items until after we are able to return to the Lodges. Once we can gather again there will be a mechanism by which the Craft will be able to review the Legislation and pose questions before voting with a paper ballot. Again, you will be hearing from the Grand Secretary with further details about these arrangements in the future when our next Grand Master believes it is appropriate. Please know it has been an incredible honor and privilege to serve you this year. I hope you will continue to strengthen all our Lodges utilizing our Each-One-Reach-One Program. Remember our current circumstances with COVID-19 is only temporary and will pass. The Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of Florida WILL SURVIVE AND THRIVE long after this pandemic disappears. You are the difference makers. Thank you for the many kindnesses you have extended myself and Sudy. Your support has been unsurpassed. Stay safe and I will look forward to seeing you whenever the next opportunity arises.

Sincerely and fraternally.

JOHN W, Westerman III

FROM THE EAST

My Brothers,

Well, here we are in May:  as of this writing, (April) I don’t have any information of weather to tell you, to get your suits out of the cleaners or to cancel your reservations at the Rosen Plaza Hotel. I am sure our M.W. Grand Master, will give us time to take care of that as it gets closer. I do know this, Easter has come and gone. I did not go to Church. Not open. I did not have our Children over or our Great Grand Children over to hunt eggs. Not allowed.  I saw the Pope on T.V., giving a Mass to an empty Plaza in Rome. (when Kat & I were there 5 years ago, there was about 15,000 to 20,000 people in that same Plaza.) not today. How about the price of Fuel? I have not seen it this low of price, in years. Both of my cars are full, but I have nowhere to Go. Stay at home.  The NFL had its draft, but not the same as usual. The commissioner Mr. Goodell was at home, and so were all the players to be selected. Not any fun for anyone. Stay at Home.  The only good news I had was from my C.P.A. She had my tax’s prepared and ready to file electronically.  I did not have to pay them on April 15th, as usually and the first quarter payment, usually due on June 15th, was not due till July 15th. So, I get a little extra time to pay them, But I still must pay all that is due to the United States Treasury Dept.  I Miss all my Brothers, and when we can meet again. I hope and Pray that we will all show at our Beautiful Lodge Building to give Thanks, that we each made it through this Terrible Time. (Remember)” In all the great trials troubles and difficult through Life, in whom do you place your Trust? Till the next time,

R:.W:. Donald H. Tucker, W:.M:.

BOTH COMMUNICATIONS ON APRIL 6TH, AND APRIL 20TH, 2020
HAVE BEEN CANCELLED BY
THE GRAND MASTER OF FLORIDA

DIRECTIVE NO. 3 March 17, 2020
FROM GRAND MASTER OF FLORIDA

To: All Worshipful Masters and Secretaries of the Particular Lodges In consequence of the new orders set out by the Governor of the State of Florida concerning the coronavirus pandemic, as Grand Master, I hereby ORDER AND DIRECT that effective immediately all Stated and Called Communications, Masonic meetings and events are suspended until at least May 4, 2020. If your Lodge meeting is tonight and it is not practical to cancel at this late hour you may proceed. My Brothers, this situation is fluid and moving very fast. The safety of our Brothers and their families shall be the priority and please use common sense and be safe. Take due notice and govern yourselves accordingly.
Sincerely and fraternally,
John W. Westerman, III Grand Master

Winterwerp for your answers. Everyone please stay Safe, and remember this Virus likes the Older people best, like Me and R:. W:. Bernie S. Take Due Notice and Govern Yourselves Accordingly. Till the next time, whenever that may be.
R:.W:. Donald H. Tucker, W:.M:.

FROM THE WEST

Greetings from the West.

They are located on circumscribe. There will a Master Mason degree in May or June. When we start practicing again come out and get involved. The Eastern Star are preparing great Dinners before the meeting.
Come have dinner and fellowship at the next meeting.
Fraternally, Henry Davis, Senior Warden

FROM THE SOUTH

Hello, from the south my Brethren. I hope you and your family are safe from this virus! As you may have heard the pancake breakfast has been cancelled and the lodge has suspended its meetings.
Building:
1. Fresh Start Cleaning Inc. will begin the deep cleaning on the 1st week of April.
2. The roof parapet cables will be completed the 2nd week of April.
3. The fire escape work has begun with measurements and will continue until completed. To the craft – material specifications are in the lodge for those brothers who asked. Additionally there are no negative reports of this company to the Better Business Bureau.
4. The first Air Conditioner service will be free from Air Kings, thanks to our previous Worshipful Master Mark King. We are still actively looking at relocating the AC piping in the kitchen storage area.
5. We are continuing to explore vendors for quotes on window replacement for the lodge. We are requesting a capital budget of $50,000 for next year’s (2021) budget to complete this project.
6. The ceiling fan in the Prep room behind the North/West Door will be replaced end of April.
7. The 3rd floor storage room in the extreme North is filled with unused items which may be discarded, unless they serve a known purpose.
8. We will be looking into the lodge room floors and elevations at the Worshipful Masters, Senior Wardens and Junior Warden Stations
Kitchen:
1. The Eastern Star will continue to provide meals for our meetings, as per the WM.
2. This Saturday Pancake breakfast is canceled but will run on the (3) week of every Saturday. Again, in order to make this successful we will need a minimum (7) volunteers, including the (2) stewards. Additionally, if we have less than (5) members including the stewards the breakfast will be cancelled for lack of participation.
3. The kitchen stove is now calibrated, and the door is repaired.
4. The Deep Fryers will be relocated in the kitchen, but not for us.
Fraternally, Bob Segarra. Junior Warden

FROM THE SECRETARY’S DESK

Brothers, there are still some who haven’t paid their 2020 dues. Please get them into the Secretary as soon as possible. If you pay on Circumscribe please drop an email to the secretary that you did so. We seem to be having a communication problem with Circumscribe letting us know who is paying their dues through them.
Brothers, this is a time WE as Masons should check in on each other. It’s as simple as making a phone call asking how you are doing and just thinking about you Brother and your family.

FROM THE EAST

My Brothers, February has come and gone. St. Patrick’s Day, and the first day of Spring, is upon us. We had a busy Feb. Congratulation’s to Brother Lamon R. Owens who became our newest E.A., Special thanks to all the Brothers who stepped UP and did a very fine Degree for this Brother. Congratulations to our newly Raised Brother Jonathan Magill who was Raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason on February 20th, at Sanford Lodge No. 62. Thank you, Sanford Lodge, for the courtesy work to Raise this Brother. By the way we had thirty-six Brothers in the Lodge for this night. Thanks to all for coming out and supporting our Lodge and the Officers who work so hard for all of us. Now about March. A stated meeting on Monday 03/02/2020 dinner at 6:00 Meeting at 7:00. We plan to update our Alter and install our Chaplain. There will be some balloting and we will be discussing the possible merger between Halifax 81 and New Smyrna 149. and we will drop down to Fellow Craft Degree, to hear the catechism of two Brothers, who will be soon Raised to Master Mason’s. Be safe in your travels and keep all our Brothers in your Prayers. Till the next time.
R:.W:. Donald H. Tucker, W:.M:.

FROM THE WEST

Greetings from the West
Henry Davis
Senior Warden

FROM THE SOUTH

Hello from the south my Brethren and things are still moving forward in the positive! On the 3rd Saturday of March we will have our first pancake breakfast. I am looking forward to seeing you all there, especially those of you who had volunteered to work. So without further talk let me bring you up to date, so we are all prepared for our next meeting.
Building:
1. We did obtain quotes from a total of (5) cleaning company and on average the Deep Cleaning quotes come to $1,350 to $2,100 total. The bimonthly cleanings $350 to $450 per month. All companies are licensed and bonded, except (1) who is not bonded, but assures me they will obtain it if selected. The top choices are: Kimmie Can Do It, cleaning services and Fresh Start Cleaning Inc.
2. A structural engineer has looked at the roof parapet cables and assures us they do not need replacement, but rust proofing and painting. We will need volunteers for brushing, treating and painting cables.
3. We have received the pricing for the fire escape of $17,500 with 50% as an initial deposit ($8,750). The structural engineer is working with our vendor to get a better price on the aluminum, which in turn will reduce the price.
4. We did call total of (10) vendors for an Air Conditioner service contract with possible relocation of the piping on the kitchen floor. So far to date we have received one quote on service only for $150 for (2) visits per year. All others were no show and/or no answer.
5. Total of (6) vendors were called for quotes on window replacement for the lodge. A quote was obtained for $49,879.84 all other vendors were either no show or could not perform commercial work.
6. We will need to purchase and replacement ceiling fan in the Prep room behind the North/West Door.
7. The 3rd floor storage room in the extreme North is filled with unused items which may be discarded, unless they serve a known purpose.
Kitchen:
1. The Eastern Star will continue to provide meals for our meetings, as per the WM.
2. Saturday Pancake breakfast will begin March 21st and run on the (3) week of every Saturday. In order to make this successful we will need a minimum (7) volunteers, including the (2) stewards. Additionally, if we have less than (5) members including the stewards the breakfast will be cancelled for lack of participation.
3. The stove door is in need of repair as it falls down when opened. I would like to present this to any members who have knowledge of and may repair it prior to me looking at a service company.
4. The Deep Fryers will be relocated in the kitchen, but not for us
Fraternally, Bob Segarra. Junior Warden

Brothers, there are still some who haven’t paid their 2020 dues. Please get them into the Secretary as soon as possible. If you pay on Circumscribe please drop an email to the secretary that you did so. We seem to be having a communication problem with Circumscribe letting us know who is paying their dues through them.

LODGE HISTORY CONTINUED

Herbert E. Donnelly, Secretary in 1934, served a total of sixteen years in that office until his death in 1951. I make special mention of him here because of his work to refinance the Mortgage. Although attendance was still down and membership dropped to 164, 1934 turned out to be a good year due to action taken on the mortgage. A Committee chaired by Herbert E. Donnelly approached Mr. W. J. S. Carr, holder of the mortgage, and persuaded him to agree to the following: Since 1927 the Lodge had paid $350.00 per quarter interest and had only paid $800.00 on the principal, the mortgage was still $19,200.00, Mr Carr agreed to cut the mortgage to $15000.00, forgive $1445.00 in delinquent interest, To chard no interest on the first $5000.00 of the $15000.00 mortgage, to allow twelve years to pay the first $5000.00 would not begin for 2 years. That interest on the final $10,000.00 would be reduced from 7% to 5%. Needless to say, the Lodge ratified this on November 19th, 1934. The years 1935 and 1936 passed without significant change. Economic conditions were extremely hard. Many suspensions and reinstatements were made involving men who had played prominent roles in history. Many Brothers were destitute, and the Lodge maintained a constant struggle to help them. Membership dropped to 155.  In 1937 the Grand Lodge realigned the Districts and this Lodge was now in the fifteenth Masonic District, of the following:  36 – Apopka, St Johns 37 – Deland,

Sanford 62 – Sanford, Orlando 69 – Orlando, Volusia 77 – Barberville, Eola 207 – Orlando, Halifax 81W – Daytona Beach, St. Cloud 221 – St. Cloud, Oviedo 243 – Oviedo, Daytona Beach 270 – Daytona Beach, New Smyrna 149 – New Smyrna Beach Fl, Winter Park 239 – Winter Park, South Apopka 165 – Winter Garden, Orange Blossom 80 – Kissimmee. The years 1938, 1939, and 1940 passed without significant change. The Brethren did everything in their power to make meetings interesting with entertainment, speakers, and dinners. They held “Smokers” after meetings to discuss efforts to reinstate suspended Brothers and provide Charity. Membership was 156. In 1941 the United States was again at war. Little was recorded in the minutes that year about the war, except that the Grand Master approved cooperation with the U. S. O. and the Masonic Service Association on behalf of military personnel.

To be continued.

FROM THE WEST

Greetings from the West, the finances for 2019 are sound Brothers and the Budget for the year 2020 have been completed and were approved at the January 20th, 2020 Stated Communication. New Smyrna is having an E. A. Degree on February 17th, 2020. Come out and support the new Brothers. In closing remember, every major success we have achieved was created by a path paved with challenges we together overcame. See you all in 2020.
Thank you, my Brothers.
Henry Davis
Senior Warden

FROM THE SOUTH

Brethren the year has begun and we are off to a great start.
Building:
1. We did meet with our cleaning crew to review their work and obtain a quote to seal and buff our dining hall floor. Additionally, we readdressed the vacuuming of the lodge after the 1/20/20 meeting and they decided to not charge us and resign. I am currently getting quotes from other cleaning groups.
2. A structural engineer has looked at the roof parapet cables and assures us they do not need replacement, but rust proofing and painting. He is willing to sign off and did supply a letter regarding actions required. We will need volunteers for painting cables.
3. The structural engineer is working with our lodge to get the best price for replacement of the fire escape to an aluminum structure vs. steel.
4. Quotes are also pending on an Air Conditioner service contract with possible relocation of the piping on the kitchen floor.
5. A quote is scheduled on 1/23/20 @ 1-2 pm for Window replacement for the lodge.
6. The Anteroom light has been changed.
7. Brother Bob Wheeler offered a replacement ceiling fan for the Prep room behind the North/West Door. However we will need a volunteer to replace it.
8. The 3rd floor storage room in the extreme North is filled with unused items which may be discarded, unless they serve an unknown purpose.
Kitchen:
1. The Eastern Star will continue to provide meals for our meetings, as per the WM.
2. Saturday Pancake breakfast will begin in February and run on the ____ Saturday of every month.
4. The Deep Fryers will be relocated in the kitchen, but not for us.
Again I say thank you and I look forward to serving our lodge!
Robert Segarra,                                                                                                                                                                              Junior Warden

LODGE HISTORY CONTINUED

The year 1931 passed with the same problems, There was some Degree work and many requests from indigent Brothers. Two more officers were forced to leave to seek employment. The Lodge voted to rent to several organizations and hold dances to raise money. Overall, the spirit of the Brotherly love and fellowship with the Eastern Star seemed to deepen and the Lodge got through a hard year. The year 1932 was the worst so far. Attendance dropped dramatically. On April 4th, 1932, committees were appointed to encourage attendance and to try to collect dues. Very little Degree work was done. Membership dropped from 250 to 186. October 17th, 1933 the District Deputy reported that Grand Lodge finances were as bad as ours. On November 17th, 1932 a motion prevailed to reduce dues from $12.00 a year to $10.00, and fees from a total of $75.00 to $50.00. The Lodge conferred only one Degree during this year. Membership dropped to 179. Every meeting was used to encourage attendance. Guest speakers and special programs and dinners were used. There is no doubt in my mind that fellowship is all that got the Lodge through this year. To be continued.

MASONIC EDUCATION FOR FEBRUARY

This comes from an article entitled “The Moon, Men and Masons” by Edward Heimiller, Curator of the Maryland Masonic Museum. It has been edited, can be read unedited in the Free State Freemason magazine Fall 2019 edition, and is submitted without permission.
Our sense of wonder of the sun, moon and stars has captured our imaginations for centuries. This fascination with the heavens, outer space, has inspired incredible technology and advanced civilization. NASA, established by the US government in 1958 to advance and encourage peaceful applications in space sciences has led the US space exploration efforts, notably, the Apollo 11 that resulted in the first manned mission to land on the moon on July 20, 1969 with Col. “Buzz” Aldrin being the first Freemason on the moon. Over the years a number of Freemasons have had the honor of participating in the NASA space program. A select few as astronauts with many more serving supporting roles of scientists, engineers and beyond. A number of artifacts preserved in the museum are testaments to NASA’s achievements, challenges and reminders of the hazards and sacrifices of space exploration.
A medal commissioned around 1969 to commemorate the Apollo 8 mission which orbited the moon 10 times before returning to earth was the first to enter the museum. It was made from metal that flew in space during the mission. It was donated by Edward Sauerman Jr., a mechanical draftsman and member of Union Lodge #60 of Maryland.
A unique group of objects related to Lt. Col. “Gus” Grissom, one of the original Mercury astronauts and the second American in space are among the most captivating in the museum. Grissom was a member of Mitchell Lodge #228 in Mitchell Indiana.
Here are a few more Freemans who were NASA astronauts:
Col. Buzz Aldrin, Oak Park Lodge #864 Montgomery AL The second man to walk on the moon and the first Freemason to set foot on the moon.
Col. Gordo Cooper, Carbondale Lodge #82 Carbondale, CO. Mercury Project, the first American to sleep in space.
Col. Don Eisele, Luther B. Turner Lodge #732 Columbus OH. Apollo 7
Col. John Glen Jr., Concord Lodge # 688 Concord OH. First American to orbit the earth.
Col. Jim Irwin, Tajon Lodge #104 Colorado Springs CO. 8th person to walk on the moon
Capt. Wally Schirra Jr, Canaveral Lodge #339 Cocoa Beach, FL The only person to have flown in Mercury, Apollo and Gemini Projects.
Pioneers in space exploration continue to innovate and explore uncharted territory. The early history of NASA and legacy of the veterans and patriots engaged in their missions to explore the far reaches of the universe remain important aspects of American history. A display in the museum serves as a testament to these brothers involved in space exploration and can also be found on the museum website: MDMasonicMuseum.org.

FROM THE WEST

  • My Brothers, I would like to thank all of you for your support in electing me Senior Warden for the year 2020. With your help we can make this a successful year. Get involved and make a difference. From paying dues to help cleaning the lodge. Every brother can make a difference. Look for year 2020 to be a great year.

FROM THE SOUTH

Greetings from the South my brothers, and with this coming year I would like to start by thanking all of my
Brothers, Mentors and especially The Craft, for allowing me to advance into this position and I will do everything in
my power to make you proud.
So for this next year under the great watch of our Worshipful Master and our newly elected / appointed officers
many things should be accomplished.
As your new Junior Warden I plan on keeping our lodge as one of the best in this great State of Florida, through
Masonic Education, building maintenance, lodge ethics and of course brotherly love and affection. I realize that I
have very big shoes to fill as my predecessors were amazing!
So let me start by saying, as I enter and retire from the lodge, I am reminded of what I believe are the essential
words to any great lodge, the Opening and Closing Charge! It reminds us of our bond as brothers, makes us
humble, and strengthens our society and our fraternity. Truly it sets the ground work for making a great man a
better man! I am truly proud to be a member of New Smyrna Lodge #149!
Again I say thank you and I look forward to serving our lodge!

BROTHERS, THE LODGE OFFICE WILL BE CLOSED FROM DECEMBER 18TH, 2019 UNTIL
JANUARY 2ND, 2020. THE SECRETARY WILL BE OUT OF TOWN ENJOYING HIS FAMILY AND
GRANDSON MASON. ANY PROBLEMS CALL THE WORSHIPFUL MASTER OR SENIOR WARDEN.

To the Brothers, their ladies, and all the many others who helped with the Tommy Turlington Fundraiser
WOW! What a great time we had and what a great amount of money we raised to support RWTommy
Turlington, Deputy Grand Master on his masonic journey. The money is allocated to his Grand Master’s
Homecoming.
We raised $5,884.00, a number unheard of in this district This could not have been done without the help of
Walter and Edie Layton who prepared the meal. What a great team they are. Adding to the success were the
Brothers and their wives from NSB 149 who worked hard to avert a potential disaster as many more people
showed up at the last minute – awesome job folks. A hearty thanks goes out to the DeMolay boys for their
assistance in serving the meal. We collected $325.00 for them from our may gracious visitors.
Nearly 140 people attended including Most Worshipful Grand Master John W. Westerman and his lady Sudy. Also
attending were Past Grand Master Stephen P. Boring and his lady Mary Jane, along with several DDGMs and DIs
from around the state. Grand Marshal RWDon Cowart and his Lady Dell also joined us for the evening.
A huge THANK YOU goes out to RW E. W. “Bill” Catsulis for doing a super job as our auctioneer for the dessert
sale. We were unable to provide a sound system for him but he really didn’t need it. He’s a really funny guy and
everyone appreciated his hard work.
Jackie and Rita Arrington from District 11, along with my wife Betty, did most of the planning and preparation and
completed the decorations along with help from a few others.
Next is a shout out to the Brothers in our Lodges who sold tickets – thanks guys.
A personal thanks to my lady Betty for standing by me.
Fraternally and respectfully,
RWHoward Chase
