FROM THE EAST

Greetings from the East,

We miss you at our Lodge functions; if you are concerned about contracting Covid-19, our Lodge environment is better than most. Several brothers have contracted the virus (God only knows where) but are now cured and have natural immunity. Several others have received the vaccines and are safe to be around. We all wear face masks (except when we are eating or drinking), social distancing is natural. Temperature is taken as you enter the building, and hand sanitizer and face masks are available. So, as I said before, our lodge environment is better than most. Come visit us and join in our activities; We would love to see you.

At our last Stated communication, we had the visit of our Right Worshipful District Deputy Grand Master Glen E. Good. There was a great turn out. The brothers from Gateway Lodge came to retrieve the Gavel.

We voted on 2 new members. One by transfer, of Brother Brain Moore. One by Plural, of Grand Master MW Thomas L. Turlington, Jr. To have are Grand Master as a member is a great honor.

The Master Masons Association meeting will be the first Wednesday April 7, at New Smyrna Lodge, Our Senior Warden will be preparing the food. Dinner at 6pm. Meeting at 7pm.

The second meeting in April we are having Master Mason Degree for 3 brothers. Degree practice for the first section is March 31 and April 8. Second section April 7 and 14.

FROM THE SOUTH

Greetings from the South.

Happy Spring everyone., This is by far my favorite time of the year. The days get longer and there’s a feeling of rebirth, refreshing and renewal. With that in mind, we will be looking at our Lodge building and finding areas that could stand a little updating. I have comprised a committee at the behest of R∴W∴ Greg Davis to investigate how to update & beautify the downstairs area of our Lodge and welcome your input. Please feel free to grab me at the next meeting, shoot me a text, or send an e-mail with your ideas. I will keep everyone posted when we have a solid direction we would like to work towards.

As far as the refreshing side goes, I will leave you with a small dose of Masonic humor courtesy of – Bro. Shalini Williams of Casa Grande, AZ.

A small Lodge had had a string of bad luck. It was preparing to initiate a candidate on a steamy evening in June and it′s air conditioner had stopped working. After sweating their way through part of the work, the Master had asked the candidate what he most desired. The candidate replied, “a beer”. At this juncture, the W.M., being startled, whispered “light” to the candidate. “OK,” the candidate replied, “a lite beer.”

I look forward to seeing everyone soon, stay safe and healthy!

Jonny Magill, Junior Warden

MASONIC EDUCATION

The Missing Comma and the Lost Meaning

When opening a Lodge of Entered Apprentice Masons, the Master asks the Senior Warden “What came you here to do”?  Brother Bob Wheeler also asks the newly made Entered Apprentice Masons the same question when they recite their Catechism.  The Senior Warden and the EA’s each reply “to learn to subdue my passions and improve myself in Masonry”.

This discussion will provide food for thought and you can decide for yourself “what came you here to do”.

Each of us were once Entered Apprentice Masons and we learned our Proficiency or Catechism by “mouth to ear”.  Once we became Master Masons we were presented with our own “little red” or in my case “little black” book containing the Ritual and we could see for ourselves where all those hard to learn words came from.  When first looking at that daunting text, do any of us remember seeing some or any punctuation in that single letter key?  I do not recall seeing any punctuation.

In the FC degree we were exposed to the winding staircase with its three, five and seven steps and the symbolism attached to them.  The number three denotes many symbolic things in Masonry.

The Three principle officers of a Lodge are the Worshipful Master, Senior and Junior Warden.

The Three Great Lights in Masonry are the Holy Bible, Square, and Compasses.

The Three burning tapers represent the Sun, Moon and Master of the Lodge.

The Principle Tenants of Masonry are Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth.

The Immoveable Jewels are the Square, Level and Plumb.

This list can go on and on.  But what would these symbols be without a comma or a pause?

The Three principle officers of a Lodge are the Worshipful Master Senior and Junior Warden.

The Three Great Lights in Masonry are the Holy Bible Square, and Compasses.

The Three burning tapers represent the Sun Moon and Master of the Lodge.

The Principle Tenants of Masonry are Brotherly Love Relief, and Truth.

The Immoveable Jewels are the Square Level and Plumb. You get the picture.

The point being made is, that as an Entered Apprentice you came to do three things – not two things.  Let us go back to the “What came you here to do” question if there was a comma.

First, you came “to learn”.  In the Opening Charge, which is used in this Lodge, we hear that “knowledge is obtained by degrees and wisdom dwells with contemplation; therefore, we should seek it.”

The Charge also tells us that one of the Great Objects of our Association is the promotion of a correct knowledge of the duties we owe to God, to our neighbor and to ourselves.

Next, you came “to subdue my passions”.  The Charge also reminds us that “one of the Great Objects of our Association is the restraint of improper desires and passions”.  It goes on to say, “it is useless parade to talk of the subjection of irregular passions within the walls of the lodge if we allow them to triumph in our intercourse with each other”.  It also tells us to “cultivate the great moral virtues which are laid down on our Masonic Trestle Board”.

Finally, you came to “improve myself in Masonry”.  The Charge directs us to “be united and practice with diligence the Sacred Tenants of our Order”.  The Charge goes on to tell us “to improve in everything that is good, amiable and useful”. It is hoped you will see that to receive the full meaning of “What came you here to do”, you will add the comma in the right place – “to learn to subdue my passions and improve myself in Masonry”.  Remember “what came you here to do” when you listen to the Opening Charge.  It tells you what you came to do.

Thank you.

Bill Ptashnik, PM
