The Worshipful Master requests your attendance at our Stated Communication
August 21st, 2017
From the East
At our last meeting on July 17 we voted on the Resolution for Daytona Lodge #270 to merger with our lodge. Same resulted in a unanimous vote for the merger. The Lodge officers have signed the paperwork and our Secretary has forwarded the resolution to Grand Lodge for approval. Hopefully it will be approved and returned quickly so we can move forward with it. Hopefully the merger will be complete by September. Daytona #270 officers as well as the members of New Smyrna #149 are very excited about the merger and its final steps.
We also have a newly raised member, Warren Carman, who was raised on July 15th at Sanford Lodge. Brother Carman was not able to attend our Master Mason Degree for our other newly raised Brothers a while back at New Smyrna Lodge due to his work Schedule. I would personally like to thank the members of New Smyrna Lodge that did attend that degree along with all the members of Sanford Lodge who invited us to be part of the degree. Three other brothers other than Warren were also raised during that degree. What great fellowship it was! The Junior Warden, Mike Hindley, did an outstanding job in the East as well as King Solomon.
At this time, we have 4 new men that have contacted the Lodge and are interested in becoming new Masons. Hopefully they will like what they see and will move forward with their passion.
Until our next meeting, Brothers all be safe and contact us if you are in need of assistance with anything.
Fraternally, WM:. Walter G. Layton
From the West
Hello, my brothers from New York; I have been spending time with my family and some important friends that I had not seen in some time. Bonnie and I went to Owego New York to look up my father’s side of my family, while there I went to Owego’s Masons Lodge. Unfortunately for me the lodge had gone dark for the summer and I was unable to reach their Worshipful Master. The Red Jacket Lodge here in Lockport New York where we have our house is also dark for the summer. It was great to hear that the Grand Masters official visit went very well. I understand that our Lodge was well represented, and had a good showing of support for our own Brother DDGM Donald Tucker. I have called many of our Brothers, to keep up with all that is going on at our Lodge. The news that our Brother Warren Carmen was Raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason at Sanford Lodge No. 62 on July 15th is something I have been waiting to hear. Congratulations my Brother. Thank you to all the Brothers who attended and assisted in the Master Mason Degree at Sanford Lodge No. 62. Thank you Junior Warden Mike Hindley for the fine job you did as Worshipful Master for the Degree. Worshipful Master Walter Layton called me to inform me that the ballot on the merger with Daytona Lodge No. 270 was unanimous. And Secretary Worshipful A. J. Winterwerp called to tell me that the resolution was now on its way to the Grand Lodge for their approval and the Grand Master’s signature. One of our Lodge visitors that calls our Lodge his second home over the winter, Worshipful Jim Kelley lives here in Lockport NY. Bonnie and I met with him and his wife for lunch and he had nothing but praise for our Lodge and the Brothers. We went to Canada to see Worshipful Gary Price and is wife Marilyn and attended his Masonic Lodge in Midland Ontario where I was well received. I miss all my brothers and would love to hear from you when you have a minute .

I have tried to obtain information on when the permanent dues cards with your picture will be sent out for those who have done so. The answer I get back is, “it is still in the works to get the permanent dues cards out.” So, Brothers all I can say is be patient and when I hear any news I will communicate it to the Craft. You can still sign up on Circumscribe by the instructions that are on line or call me at the office and I will help you to sign up. You will still need to sign up for Circumscribe. A J Winterwerp PM,
Sickness and Distressed
Brothers, Brother Hines checks his computer every evening and loves getting messages, though he usually does not type replies due to his physical limitations. Michael can type a couple of words to acknowledge receipt, but that’s about it and it’s a huge effort to do so. So, if any Brothers ca find time to stop by, drop him a card, or email line to say Hi, to our Lodge Brother. He reads all the Trestle Boards posted and keep up with all that is going on in our District. He remains a faithful Master Mason even though he is restricted to his room almost every hour of each day, so please take a moment and help make his day a bit brighter. Address, and email is Ocean View Nursing Home, 2810 S. Atlantic Ave., New Smyrna Beach Fl. 32169 Attn. Michael Hines Room 629 firstname.lastname@example.org.
Brother Winterwerp’s son battling cancer, Brother Lawrence’s wife,
Brother, please contact the Secretary if you know of a Brother or his family who needs our prayers and concerns, leave a message and it will get into the Trestle Board and Meeting Minutes.
THE BUILDING OF NEW SMRYNA’S TEMPLE
Continued: The years 1913 and 1914 passed without special events. The Lodge was busy with Degree work and charitable projects. One of the Brothers raised in 1914 was J. S. Duss Jr., a local attorney. He became active in the Lodge soon after he was raised and would play and important role in building the Temple. On June 7, 1915, the subject of building a Temple again came up. Brother Duss made a motion which was tabled that $20.00 of every $30.00 collected in application fees be set aside in a building fund. The motion was not again discussed. On September 4th, 1916, a committee reported that the most feasible way to raise funds to build a Temple would be to issue bonds t Masons. A committee was appointed to prepare and handle this bond issue. A motion prevailed that a committee of five be appointed as a building committee. On September 18th, 1916, the finance committee reported that in order to proceed with a bond issue it would be necessary to incorporate. Two motions prevailed one that the Lodge form a corporation. Brother J. S. Duss Jr., with Brothers Brunson and Chilton were appointed to that committee. On October 2, 1916, a motion prevailed to increase fees to $15.00 per degree. On January 29, 1917, a motion prevailed to pay preliminary expenses of the Masonic Building Association. At the same time, the City of New Smyrna was granted permission to lay a sewer line across the north end of the Masonic lot. This year for the first time the Lodge enjoyed electric lights in the Lodge room. The usual electric bill was $2.00 per month. On August 6, 1917, a motion prevailed to lower the fee for Degree to the original $10.00. To be Continued
