FROM THE SOUTH
Greeting from the South
As we are dim for the summer months, there is little to report in the way of Lodge business. I would like to submit excerpts from a very interesting article about President William Mckinley which is titled Templary’s Face on the $500 Bill by Sir Knight James A. Marples of Texas. Most people are aware of the common paper currency that is currently in use in the US…$1, $2, $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100. Currency is defined as paper money as opposed to coinage, which as the name suggests are coins minted from metal. Technically, our US Constitution expressly stipulates that only silver and gold coin can be accepted as legal tender in payment of debts. It is an innovation which created paper currency to circulate and be accepted. However, paper remains paper and is subject to burn, it is subject to devaluation overnight and is also subject to being abolished. Today, large denomination of paper money above a $100 bill are not printed and have not been circulated by the US Treasury since 1969. Since higher value Federal Reserve Notes have been discontinued, they aren’t accepted at most businesses. However, their value to collectors for any “uniqueness” can be astronomical, far above face value. Sir Knight William McKinley has his face imprinted on the unique $500 bill printed from 1928 to 1934. Mckinley studied to be a minister but the Civil War intervened. He ultimately became the 25th president of the United States and was assassinated six months into his second term of office in 1901. Mckinley’s successor, Brother Theodore Roosevelt (also a Master Mason, but not a Templar) took over as president. A quick reminder of how Mckinley became a Mason is appropriate. He fought on the Union side in the Civil War and saw a doctor treating soldiers and handing out small sums of money, including to Confederate soldiers. McKinley was puzzled and asked the doctor who replied, “Well, if they are able to pay me back they will, but it makes no difference to me. They are brother Masons in trouble and I am only doing my duty.” McKinley was impressed and in due time, joined Freemasonry.
Many people wonder why McKinley’s likeness was chosen to be on the $500 bill.Basically, he was an enormously popular president who was gunned down by an extremist as he shook McKinley’s hand in Buffalo NY. He was known to be a good man and a good Mason. Yet, he was murdered for being courteous to his eventual assassin.
as noted, McKinley $500 bills were printed between 1928 and 1934. The most valuable being the 1928 series which can be worth up to $10,000 for their rarity. The $500 bills with McKinley’s face went out of circulation in 1969 because the public rarely used them. For many citizens, the name McKinley was synonymous with trust.. Even his political foes described him as a congenial, honorable man worthy of trust. It is only fitting that the memory of Sir Knight William McKinley is perpetuated by his face being on the $500 bill. His countenance exemplifies strength, chivalry, even temperament, mercy and magnanimity. It is hard to beat those traits and I firmly believe that nearly everyone wished that they had some $500 bills in their pocket right now.
Sir Knight James Marples
That’s it for this month, and as usual, come to Lodge when you can. Even if you can’t stay for the meeting, come have a nice meal and enjoy a little fellowship with your brothers.
Fraternally,
Bob Wheeler SW

HISTORY OF THE LODGE CONTINUED
On May 21st, 1928, the Lodge authorized the Lodge attorney J. S. Duss Jr., to release the contractor’s bond. By this time the architect, Eaton J. Moughton had accepted the building and submitted his final bill of $1042.99. The final bill from the contractor of $53,478.80 had been received. There was still and outstanding note held by the New Smyrna Bank for the purchase of the Temple Corporation which the Lodge had made in 1925. No record of the amount outstanding at this time could be found. There was one further note of $ 640.44 due the D. F. Douglas Company for additional material furnished which was in addition to the final bill previously submitted. Of this final bill, $17,347.67 was still outstanding. The Lodge had previously authorized the Finance Committee to take a $20,000.00 loan at 8% interest offered by the Acacia Life Insurance Company. However, the Committee chose to take a $20.000.00 loan from Mr. W. J. S. Carr, a local businessman at 7% interest. This would later prove to be a wise decision. Thus the of building the Temple was complete. It had been a difficult one, spanning a full twenty-two years. It is my observation that the economic progress of the Lodge was directly linked to the economic progress of the community. The tremendous increase in land values in the community gave the Lodge a healthy profit on the sale of the original lot on Canal Street. This probably was the single most important factor in making it economically possible to build the Temple. From this observation, the task that lay ahead would be equal to, if not more difficult. For as surely as the economy had risen, so surely was it destined to fall. TO BE CONTINUED.
