FROM THE EAST
Brothers, I would like to thank you for electing me to the east for the 2021. It is a great honor for me to serve as your Worshipful Master for 2021. It has been 27 years since I was installed Worshipful Master for the first time.
Isn’t it something how time goes by so fast? January 22nd I will have been a Master Mason 34 years. I hope everybody had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Last year 2020 with the virus it is been a challenging year. A special thanks to RW Don Tucker and his officers for an outstanding job that they did last year with what we had to deal with the virus. The OES has agreed to prepare our dinners for the next year what a great help this has been for the lodge. January 18th there will be an Entered Apprentice degree. There will be practices January 7th at 6:30 and January 13th at 6:30. January 17th which is a 3rd Sunday I would like to meet at the Olive Garden in Port Orange at 12:45 for fellowship and Lunch. Meet outside to get a head count. This includes your wife’s and OES. For the men wear your Lodge shirts to show we are Masons. We have a lot of new officers for this next year let’s come out and support them. By working together this year we will be able to accomplish many things. Remember we are Brothers.
Henry Davis Worshipful Master 2021
FROM THE WEST
Hello, form the West my Brethren and may I start by saying I am proud and honored to be in New Smyrna Lodge #149. Well recently I did contract the COVID virus but have had no long-term ill effects and only suffered moderate flu-like symptoms. From a medical standpoint I must encourage you all to continue wearing your mask, get your flu vaccine and the new COVID vaccine when available.
Building:
- The window replacement of the lodge is still pending. There is a 12-14-week delay in the start due to COVID. They also agreed to stage the work, so not to interfere with lodge business. We did receive a new quote from CW windows to include the fire escape door.
- We have investigated fire rated windows; however, they are unavailable and so we will continue to use the fire suppression system in place.
- Other: The 125th anniversary Challenge Coins & Pins are completed.
Robert Segarra, Senior Warden
FROM THE SOUTH
Brethren, greetings from the South. Let me begin by first taking a moment to thank each and every one of you for assisting me on my journey thus far, and more importantly for bestowing upon me the trust and honor that goes along with becoming an officer of this fine Lodge. It is an honor that I do not take lightly or look at as feather in the proverbial cap, but instead realize that to continue our success, it will take a lot of work, dedication and communication. Luckily, the officers that served before me have led us down the path of a great future here at 149. I will work diligently to make sure we continue on that path. Thank you to Bros. Robert Segarra and Robert L Wheeler for getting me up to speed with the duties and responsibilities of Junior Warden, you’ve been extremely helpful. I look forward to seeing everyone at Lodge, and please remember we are still in the midst of the Covid Pandemic, so to ensure the safety of all involved, we ask that you continue to observe the PPE and Social Distancing guidelines set forth by the Grand Lodge. We will continue temperature testing for all lodge visitors and members until further notice. I will have a comprehensive update for everyone on the status of the electronic locks, windows and overall status of our beautiful building in the next iteration of the Trestle Board. There are no words that can express my gratitude to my New Smyrna Lodge #149 brothers and 2020 Lodge officers for making me feel at home. I’m look forward to getting to know each and every one of you better, and looking forward to getting to work! My door and ear will remain open for any questions, comments, concerns, or ideas you may have. Jonny Magill, Junior Warden

MASONIC EDUCATION
The Proper Way to Wear a Masonic Ring
Q. What is the proper way to wear a Masonic ring? Should the points of the compasses be toward or away from the body? If you were hanging the American flag, would you put the stars down? The same holds true of the ring. Usually it is a gift, and has sentimental value for the wearer. It should look right side up to him. Rings are therefore worn with the points of the compasses toward the wearer.”
A. This subject is one on which Grand Lodges have made no regulation and popular opinion is divided. We must therefore reason from analogy. When the emblem of the square and compasses is displayed on a building, pennant, button, watch charm, etc., universal custom requires the points of the compasses point downward.
When displayed on the Altar they point away from the Master. As the Master from his station views the compass from the Altar of his Lodge, the points are from, not towards him. As the wearer of a compass watch charm views it, the points are down and away from his eyes. In a similar way as he views the emblem on his ring the points should be down or away from his eyes.
The square is the symbol of earthly, the compasses of heavenly perfection. As a combined emblem the ends of the square point up as a symbol of man’s aspirations toward God; the points of the compasses are down to represent heavenly qualities coming down from God to earth. Therefore it would seem that the proper way to wear a ring would be that in which its symbolism is best expressed: namely, that in which, when the hand is held in its usual position the points of the compasses are towards the earth and away from the wearer’s eyes.
Thus it will be seen that our conclusion does not agree with the writer in Temple Topics. He truly says that in hanging an American flag we would not put the starts down, but in hanging compasses or a square and compasses he surely would put the points of the compasses down. When so worn they all serve the same purposes, and by no means the least of these purposes is to announce to the world the proud wearer is a Mason. This article is from Phoenix Lodge No. 8, located in Fayetteville N. C. So, how do you wear your ring?

LODGE HISTORY
New Smyrna Lodge 149 did not just simply begin to work as a chartered Lodge on January 22nd, 1896. Many things had to be accomplished before that date. First of all, a number of Freemasons had to come together, and make a decision to form a Lodge. After this decision was made Florida Masonic Law clearly spelled out what they must do. Evidence shows that the first meeting took place in New Smyrna on November 2nd, 1894. We don’t know who was present or where it was held. This meeting resulted a petition for dispensation to work as a “U. D. Lodge” being made to the Grand Master of Masons of Florida. This petition, having met with his approval, Grand Master James William Boyd granted his approval, and on January 18th, 1895 New Smyrna Lodge was a U. D. Lodge. On January 21st, 1896 at the Grand Communication, in Jacksonville, the committee on Dispensations and By Laws read their report. This report recommended among other things, that a charter be granted to New Smyrna Lodge. On January 22nd, 1896, the Delegates voted and passed this report. The Grand Secretary announced that the Charter had been prepared and New Smyrna Lodge had been assigned number 149. On January 23rd, 1896, the Grand Lodge Officers installed the officers of the newly chartered Lodges, Worshipful Master George H. Count, , Senior Warden Alex A Berry, Junior Warden Fred A Berry, Treasurer Christopher L Dohn, and Secretary William A. Cook. The Lodge was chartered with 15 Master Mason members. New Smyrna Lodge No. 149 in 2021 has 411 Master Mason members. New Smyrna Lodge took its name from the town of New Smyrna Florida. New Smyrna changed its name to New Smyrna Beach, Florida. The Lodge did not and it is important to know that our correct name is New Smyrna Lodge Number 149 Free and Accepted Masons. Thus the Lodge was formed, chartered and set to work in a Lodge room located on the second floor of the C. L. Dohn Feed Store at the corner of Canal Street and Faulkner Streets in New Smyrna, Volusia County Florida.
